That was a few years ago. Why would it affect my decision to stay in the US?
December 2, 2014 at 6:56 AM #780564livinincaliParticipant
Which is why the Feds should pimp-slap fossil fuels for motor use with a punitive tax. Start it at one cent per gallon. Double every two years 🙂
That would be the best of all worlds. Incentive for consumers to move away from oil without oil production fouling North American soil.
Other ideal scenario would be a dead US frack industry combined with political unrest in the Middle East a few years from now. Oil hitting $200+/bbl would be good shock treatment for the US.
You do know that in CA we already pay almost 70 cents per gallon in taxes and AB32 is slated to push that tax up another 15 or so cents beginning next year. Of course AB 32 is so weird that we don’t even know exactly how much of a tax increase it will be. I don’t see Californians giving up their gas powered cars yet, unless you can afford a 80K Tesla.

US refineries run flat out to process cheap crude
Domestic demand for fuel has been tepid since the financial crisis, but that is also now set to change. The winter slowdown notwithstanding, drivers are returning to roads in numbers last seen in 2008 and are again buying gas-guzzling vehicles.
“The F150s [a Ford pickup model] and the SUVs are flying out of the dealers’ showrooms these days,” says Charlie Drevna, president of American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, a refiner industry group. “You can’t put the spouse, the Rottweiler, the hockey equipment and the kids in a Smart car.”December 3, 2014 at 6:35 AM #780600The-ShovelerParticipantWho knew the world would be destroyed by soccer mom’s LOL.

December 3, 2014 at 8:25 AM #780604spdrunParticipantThe only good SUV is one that’s had its crankcase drained of oil and is being revved to 6000 rpm.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-chatter-chatter-chatter-sqeeeeeeeeeee-BANG!
Watching the videos of SUVs being “disabled” for Cash for Clunkers was beautifully cathartic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy3wJWZW5_c (yes, I realize that it would have been environmentally sounder to keep those cars running since making a car costs energy. But still cathartic.)
Yeah, yeah. I know. Personal choice. Problem is that when manufacturers sell more Stupid Useless Vehicles, they tend to drop normal car and station wagon models, thus reducing MY choice of cars that don’t blow smelly goat testicles.
And there’s no FUCKING way in HELL that I’d ever want a G-d damned SUV. If I wanted to drive a truck, I’d get a job at UPS. I’ve never driven an SUV that didn’t have me wanting to rearrange the faces of the flaming assholes who misengineered it after five minutes of driving.
And people like Drevna are blithering, mouth-breathing idiots. The choice isn’t between an SUV and Smart Car. The choice is between an SUV and something like a Passat diesel wagon or Prius wagon. Both of which are actually bigger inside than many Stupid Useless Vehicles.

Well, low fuel prices clearly aren’t going to help.. But that said at least the F-150 is using aluminum sheetmetal.. Probably good for my alcoa stock.
December 3, 2014 at 10:03 AM #780607spdrunParticipantHopefully there will be another Firestone fiasco. A war in the Middle East after the US frack industry is run out of town would also be nice.
And how long do you think Found on Road Dead will keep making aluminum trucks if economy becomes less of an issue, especially if a GOP Congress modifies fuel economy standards?
Remember that auto makers like trucks because they’re CHEAP to design compared to efficient cars, so they’ll attempt every shortcut in the book.

Schadenfreudism again….
The F150 is actually a pretty reliable vehicle btw… And aluminum usage is great because it’s cutting the curb weight down significantly..
December 3, 2014 at 10:20 AM #780609spdrunParticipantI have no qualms about wishing people who destroy the environment ill. Same with people who destroy the market for enjoyable cars by buying crapmobiles instead of real cars. And people who turn driving into a Cold War style arms race. M60 tank isn’t good enough — we need some Abrams tanks, YEAH!
It’s not a question of money. Many Stupid Useless Vehicles actually cost less than real cars that aren’t complete turds to drive.

<$2/gallon gas is already happening. Some are predicting $35-40/barrel and <$2/gallon gas everywhere. I hope it stays that low for a long while.
December 3, 2014 at 4:44 PM #780629spdrunParticipantAgreed. A deflationary recession caused by a global commodity crash would be a great investment opportunity.
