I agree with your assessment regarding the extreme poles of both parties, and I commented on the radicalized elements on both the Right and the Left, and how much influence they exert on both the GOP and the Dems.

Unlike the 1930s, when the fringe elements were limited in how far and wide they could spread their message, now we have mass media, the Internet and the 24hr news cycle. And, let’s be honest, the MSM panders to the extreme elements within BOTH parties, because it generates strong ratings. I cannot believe that, to a serious journalist, someone like O’Donnell (or Palin) would inspire even the slightest interest. But, to a news producer who’s fighting off stiff competition and has to keep feeding the beast, its grist for the mill.

Its demagogy, pure and simple, and regardless of which side is practicing it. The signs and symbols and language are all there and, to people who are frightened, or angry, or disenfranchised, it resonates deeply. Just look at how the humiliated, frightened and angry German populace responded to Hitler.
