Participant
I understand where you’re coming from with this comment, but I perceive the biggest problem I will have is finding a suitable place that will even let me move in for 5 months. Maybe it would be easier than I think due to all the foreclosures out there, but I wouldn’t let me move in for only 5 months. Besides, my 1 year old daughter really doesn’t need all the stress of 2 moves in a short period of time, one will be bad enough.
Can you move everything into storage and rent a furnished place on a monthly basis?
That is what we did when we were in a temporary situation.

This would likely be quite difficult and extremely expensive, considering I would have to do it up here in LA. I’m also trying to save as much as I can, as I WILL be buying in the DC area in April.
As of now my landlords are not returning my calls. I’m going up to Port Hueneme Wednesday to talk to Legal and see what rights I have, and what the logical next step will be.
I know something is up, as by now we certainly would have received a call to arrange rent pick-up. I would be totally cool with squatting here for the next 5 months if they continue to blow me off. And they can even keep the security deposit! I just have to be careful that I don’t do anything that will jeopardize my credit.

GuestYou’re lucky in that you may be pretty well fixed for the next few months!
The only thing that would jeapordize your credit would be an unlawful detainer (court eviction). So since it appears that your landlord has abandoned the property–which is why you were so fortunate as to find the Notice of Default–you may stop paying rent and see what happens. If the landlord serves you with a 3-days notice, however, you must pay the rent. If you don’t, he can file an unlawful detainer action, and then you will be a heap of trouble. So don’t blow the money.
Oh, who pays the water and garbage bills? You don’t want to end up with no water or garbage service.
