Befiriend weightlifters.
Or people who fast.
November 14, 2011 at 2:23 PM #732920ShadowfaxParticipantStart a walking club? You can still converse while walking. Or take up golfing? Without the golf carts and beer….
I heard a story (might be an urban myth) that the head of a prominent San Diego defense company used to hold management meetings during his daily lunchtime jog. All the managers that reported to him had to be able to run. I don’t know what his pace was, but I bet they saved money on their health insurance plans with so many fit executives!

I agree.
Drinking heavily makes those social engagements more interesting and less fattening (if you can remember to avoid La Posta at 3am on Saturday night).Oh no,…I’ve said too much…

I don’t think that addresses the caloric intake problem…. And drinking is even worse in my opinion–the empty calorie conundrum.
The challenge is removing the calories from every aspect of American life. If you go to the beach, people eat and/or drink. If you go bowling, people eat/drink. If you have a party, people eat. The problem is that for some circles, eating has become the focus of every activity.
As for holidays, I think you just have to go with it. They are traditionally “feast” days, so you are fighting hundreds of years of tradition on those occasions.

I’ve had many a semi-sober (note the semi) taquito or burrito at 3am at La Posta… Going back almost 30 years.

Raid your neighbor’s houses for food and booze, thus burning off some calories whilst you pillage and plunder. Your kids get the benefit of a historical re-enactment, you not only take off some unwanted pounds, but get free booze and food as well.
If you’re not keen on Vikings, you can do a Pancho Villa motif or whatever strikes your fancy.

Combined with train watching. Preferably in Edinburgh.
November 14, 2011 at 3:12 PM #732938BoomerAangParticipantI guess it depends on the group of people you are meeting with. We can just sit and drink coffee/tea with the folks. Some friends we just play board games. A way to decrease calorie intake would just meet up with people after lunch or dinner. That makes the urge to eat decrease.

November 14, 2011 at 3:21 PM #732941briansd1GuestHow about some personal restraint and responsibility?
Just eat a little. Choose the veggies, fruits, and healthy stuff.
Food is an acquired taste, you can change. That will make you become somewhat of a food snob, and that might lead you to have different kinds of friends, or many fewer friends.
For example, refuse to eat American pastry because it’s junk. Eat only French pastry in European portions.
If you’re thin among fat people, they will wonder why you don’t eat their food. Or they will think that you’re vain or anti-social.

How about beginning with the battle of Hastings and drawing lots as to who gets to be Aethelred.
Then following that with a trivia game about the development of consultative oligarchy and angloid democracy.
You could begin with the charter of liberties in 1100 and follow through with the Magna Carta, on through up to the 14th amendment (and here where Markmax jumps in).
This could be accompanied by refreshments of nothing but Michelob Ultra, vodka shots, and salted celery.
And porn.
November 14, 2011 at 3:36 PM #732945scaredyclassicParticipantI think my parents used to play scrabble and smoke with their buddies. I remember a little bit if cheese n crackers nobody ate. But lots of cigars and cigarettes.
I used to have to sit by a window not to choke.

In college my buddies and I pretty much did the same thing. Cept I think we played rummy Q. And ate Jack in the Box tacos. With sour cream. And smoked something different.
My kids pretty much do the same thing except they’re vegetarian. They eat tofu stuff. And text each other while sitting in the same room. And listen to really loud horrible music that will probably destroy their brains. Kids these days.
