Raybyrnes- I agree that W2 employees get “punished” versus self employed. W2’s have no where to “hide” their income and take home much less than the self employed does. I guess you get rewarded for taking risks to start your own business and potentially employing others.
So to throw a wrench into this debate, why should single, houseless people who don’t tax the world’s resources with children and work for the “man” be punished for their choices?
IF you are single, you are childless and do not own a home because sadly you do make 250k but have always lives in cities that precluded you from owning real estate, then you get the heck taxed out of you. Your accountant tells you can only avoid AMT by making 3x what you are making or figuring out how to not be a W2 employee – you cannot take more deductions because of AMT. What puts you into AMT? Its not capital gains, its taking state tax as a deduction along with standard deductions that makes the % you’re deducting rather high.
Should you be a FB and bought a condo during the boom because you were technically able to although imprudent just so you can take another write off?
To agree with those that say don’t complain about those who have it better, I’ve known this for some time, but I’ve realized the only way to get ahead is to be self employed. You could probably make half of what you do as an employee, but taking advantage of EVERY tax loophole/break that you can find for a self employed!

I too have been looking for a fairly automated way to crunch these numbers for an entire zip code or town. I’ve gone from a casual observer of the market to looking at specific markets much more closely so I’m always interested in this data. I’d really like to quantify the trends, hence my post yesterday on Missions Hills. If anyone else knows of sites where we can dump clean data, that would be great for those of us who don’t mind geeking out to crunching a few numbers quarterly.

zzzParticipantdharma, Yes I think people will be shocked and is something that SHOULD happen. Its become way too easy to be irresponsible and not even question the morals or ethics of it- hey everyone else is doing it and our capitalistic society supports it. I’m tired of taking on everyone’s else’s poor decisions in the form of higher consumer costs that get passed on as well as taxes.
There are WAY too many people who are very comfortable having 10K in credit card debt who make a decent living, but really enjoy going to Bloomie’s or Saks and blowing a grand to relieve stress…might I add that these are men! Time for a reality check is long overdue.

zzzParticipantI have noticed that whether it be 11am or 3pm on any given day of the week, there are LONG lines at Costco to get gas. Friday’s and Monday’s seem to be the worst where lines run out to the street. There are a lot of people filling up who are not dressed as professionals, so I have to wonder how long they can continue to fill up their Escalades, Expeditions, etc if they are either not working, stay at home mom’s, or working in blue collar jobs that are more likely to suffer from a consumer depressed outlook.
I know of a cleaning lady who barely speaks any English who’s husband works construction. They have 2 small children. How is it she can afford to drive a Toyota Sequoia which I believe is a 50k car and gets 13/18mpg?
