Participant
Wasn’t it the Samsung Note 7 that was recalled? I got the Samsung 7 the same day the Note 7 came out and it was tempting to upgrade, now I’m glad I didn’t.
You’re right; it is the Note 7 that was recalled. I said I have an S7, but I have a Note 7.

ParticipantI got a new Samsung S7 this past weekend. Great phone. It was recalled the day after I got it. Bummer! Any suggestions on what (droid) to replace it with?

You’re welcome to your opinion zk, because i sure don’t want it! Lol
As we can see, even without the thumbs up/down vote, we’re still subject to opinions that contain only dislike and are void of any substance. But, since svelte had to type out his words, it’s clear to all that his post is meaningless, whereas with a thumbs down vote, we wouldn’t really know what he meant. We wouldn’t know whether he had a valid counterargument to my post or not. Now we can see that he doesn’t.

Participant
On one hand they can show those who are legends in their own mind exactly what the community thinks of them (a plus) …
Well, no, it can’t show exactly what they think. It can only show that they don’t like a post. A thumbs down could mean “I think you’re wrong” which, with no argument to back it up means nothing. It could mean “you’re just a troll” but, if that’s not said, no one would know that’s what it meant. It could mean “I have no valid argument, and you’re right, but I don’t want to admit that” which, of course, is lame, but which could result in a thumbs down. It could mean “you hurt my feelings.” It could mean “you made me look bad and I don’t like that.” It could mean, “you’re a democrat and I’m a republican, therefore I don’t like anything you say.” I’d wager everything I own we’d see a few of those thumbs downs. It could mean a whole bunch of things, but if all we have is a thumbs down, we don’t know which of those many things that it means.
I think that if you can’t come up with a valid counterargument to something, you should either admit that or not say anything. Not just vote thumbs down. If you don’t like something for another reason, and you want to indicate that you don’t like it, you should indicate the reason.

Participant
I concur with sdgrrl and mixalot, among others. BG might have strong opinions, as do many others here, but she’s made quite a few valuable contributions as well.
The nonsensical personal drama and name-calling that goes on here detracts dramatically from the overall discussions and debates. It’s a shame because there are quite a few really insightful posters who’ve been silenced by the ugly behavior of a small minority of posters.
As I’ve said, as long as she continues to not put words in other peoples mouths, as long as she continues to not lie about what other people have said, as long as she continues to not say that I have said things that I didn’t say, I concur.
But if she’s going to say that I said things about my marriage that I didn’t say, I’m going to stand up to that. You people might not know me, but there are people who read this blog who know who I am, who are friends of mine. If she said, “CA renter, you said in a previous post that your husband is a selfish jerk,” even when you didn’t say it, I don’t think you’d have quite the same attitude.
All of this happened a year and a half ago, and I had let it go. I said, a year and a half ago, that she should clean up her act or go. And you agreed that she should clean up her act. And, as far as I can tell, she did. Not sure what’s different now.

Participant
Sully.
There’s a guy who earned every nickel he ever made in his career and then some, all with one decision. A lot of times you hear, “the pilot was a hero,” when all he did was what any pilot could’ve and would’ve done. But this was different. A brilliant, timely decision, made coolly under massive pressure. I don’t think most pilots would’ve made that decision. “Hero” is a pretty nebulous word, but, to me, Captain Sullenberger showed us what the very best pilots do: Make great and timely decisions when lives are on the line.
Of course, for every Sully, there’s an Air France 447 pilot and a Colgan 3407 pilot and a Comair 5191 pilot. They’re the weak link a lot of the time, precisely because they’re human. But they still have something that is both unachievable by a computer and necessary.

Participant
self driving planes seem way less complex than self driving cars.
is that a developping technology?
There’s an old joke among airline pilots. Background: There used to be 3 pilots in a lot of airliners. There are only 2 in most of them now. Automation has vastly reduced the workload. Even 2 are rarely necessary.
The joke:
Pretty soon, there will be only one pilot and one dog in the cockpit. The pilot will be there to feed the dog, and the dog will be there to bite the pilot if he tries to touch anything.
It’s not a funny joke, but it indicates the direction automation is taking things. Planes can already fly and land themselves quite easily. And the technology no doubt exists to replace pilots altogether for routine flights. But, in real life, for flying people around, you’ll always need at the very least one pilot on board. When the shit hits the fan, no computer can replace the judgment of a human being. Better yet, 2 human beings.

You don’t think is kinda James Bond sophisticated? Guns are badass.
Guns are not badass. Guns are the opposite of badass. If a guy needs a gun (or a gun lamp) to appear badass or to feel badass, then he is exactly the opposite of badass.
Just my opinion.

That about sums it up, I think.
