ParticipantInteresting (from a technical point of view). I once had to look at how to encode timestamping in transmitted audio for sync purposes (long story). The method that was least perceptible was phase shifting frequencies (or select frequencies) at a period below 60Hz. Anything faster and it may be perceived as a sound. The other problem is that the transmission of most ‘voice’ speakers is above 200Hz and below 3kHz. While some people may have high quality audio systems attached to their TVs, not everyone does. I suspect that the timestamp pulse is more like every minute or so, or even less to avoid collision between transmissions. It could be that a encoding phase transitions occur every 2-3 seconds – kind of a 1/2 baud transmission.
You are kind of doing audio-steganography. If the bandwidth of the data being transferred breaks into the region of human hearing – it will be perceived.
Now I am tempted to digitize a bunch of network audio – and find out if I see phase shifting… I wonder if I can see the phase shifting in digitally encoded audio from video data – some video encoding uses something similar to mp3 encoding for audio.

A flat bed
It fits along that line over there… It is completely without sides, but with two ends.October 19, 2015 at 11:52 PM in reply to: OT: How to build a cost effective outdoor data network #790486ucodegen
ParticipantI have extended WiFi using antennas, particularly directionals. I have tested going diagonally across a parking lot, more than 300 feet. Where is your base station relative to the acreage? is the land flat?
Using uploaded packets, you may want to watch out for collisions. Maybe have the data packet contain current reading and 3 previous readings(time stamped). This is a simple way to allow recovery of drop outs. The data you are sending is probably small relative to the minimum packet size, so slightly larger packet will really not have a cost.

Participant
bleeding gums and deep pockets around teeth. When the dentist does that test where they stick a sharp object between your teeth and gums, he manages to call out “4, 5, 6” as opposed to “1, 2, 3″
This tends to be an indication of gingivitis. Things to look at:- Brushing – At least after meals, before bed. You want sugars to be on the teeth/gums for as short a period of time. Flossing is also important. I use a water-pik forsome of my flossing. After brushing, rinse with Listerine.
- Toothpaste – don’t use the sweet ones. I tend to use Arm&Hammer’s Peroxicare. Tastes like crap, but works well and contains both hydrogen-peroxide and baking soda.
- Diet – Cut sweets/sugars and things that can be quickly converted to sugars.
- Immune issues – are you immuno-suppressed? Taking immuno-suppressants (medicines to reduce rashes etc are immuno-suppressive)
How are your teeth in general? cavities can contribute to gingivitis.
Vitamins – I take Nature Made Multi-Complete. I used to take Twin-Labs multi, but seemed to find that they were losing ‘potency’. There is no real inspection/standard for purity and concentration (that the vitamins really contain the vitamins they claim). Some vitamins are cert’d by USP (U. S. Pharmacopeial Convention). They have some standards and lists of vitamins that they test/verify. NatureMade, Kirkland, TruNature and Berkley & Jensen are listed.

Participant
What floor is the apartment on? First/ground floor can be humid from ground humidity. Best to replace the carpet with tiles.
What about the leak in the wall? Was it fixed?
Other than that, your friend should frequently open the windows and air out the space. Running the AC helps. Cooking, showering and breathing in a small space causes humidity build up.
Btw, flood/mold remediation is a huge scam.
It is not a scam, though some ‘remediators’ are scammers. Mold is spread through spores(they are the ‘seed’ for Mold and other fungi-incl mildew). Spores are resistant to a hard vacuum(space), radiation, and chemicals. You don’t just dry it up and paint over it. Doing that instead of true remediation can get you in a lot of financial trouble.
I would add that concrete slabs release moisture. That’s why when you remove linoleum off of slab, you get that moldy smell. So avoid moisture sensitive flooring such as carpet or even wood (if you don’t have good moisture barrier, wood will get moldy). Go with stone/tile.
It would be better to say that concrete slabs are porous to water (unless the concrete is hydrophobic). Normal concrete ‘wicks’ water up from the ground. This is why a moisture barrier is required when building a slab foundation, as well as certain types of retaining walls. Most slab garages do not have a moisture barrier (cost cutting), personally I think garages should have a moisture barrier. Patios also don’t have moisture barriers – this is why ‘extending’ a house onto a segment that used to be a patio is problematic (No foundation supports, no moisture barrier). Many unlicensed/non-permitted additions are done off of ‘patio slabs’.
Find all sources of moisture. Leaks in the roof, or from apart above. Leaky sinks, etc. Places in the bathroom where caulk has dried out and water can get behind boards. Fix those.Removal of all materials (wall board, studs, baseboards) with mold or exposure to the moisture. You can’t just dry out moldy areas, you must rip them out and replace them.
Thoroughly dry out any areas with moisture.
Replace all materials, making sure that enclosed areas are dry and will stay dry.
Remove all carpet and replace with materials less likely to hold moisture or mold.
Good quick summary of what to do (what the landlord should do).
It was a lame design because all the steam would just go into the bedroom and there was no fan.
This is a residential building code violation. Probably an non-permitted addition. Bathrooms are required to be vented, either powered vent or a window of a minimum size.As for what to do on the rental, photograph(both overview and detailed photos), document everything you can on the mold. See if you can get the landlord to do proper remediation. If not, move out and pass a copy of your documentation to ‘authorities’. https://www.google.com/search?q=landlord+mold+issues&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

You can always cancel the term life insurance if you no longer need it.
This is what the insurance companies rely on. Sum up the payments with an estimated alternate return and it is no where near what the coverage is(except when the coverage goes over the age boundary of about 73.).Insurance should only handle liabilities that could not be covered on a death (mortgage would be a good one since the wife would now have to handle raising kids on one income instead of a shared income), but it does not substitute for an IRA, savings or anything like that. Remember, it only pays out on your death.. and in the mean time, you are paying until you get tired of it.

Participant
Is it this?
15,300 kwh / 10.4 kw = 1471 hours
1471 hours / 365 days = 4 hours / day.
Do I have that right or am I out to lunch?
4 hours a day seems light…
This is a good estimate. The amount of light per square meter falling on the collector is proportional to the cos of the angle between a line to the sun and a line perpendicular to the surface of the solar collector. Therefore to do a ‘flat-line’ estimate, they use a effective value of about 4 hours. It does depend upon your latitude, the angle at which the collectors are mounted at vs sun-arc and whether the collectors are ‘trackers’.ucodegen
ParticipantIt doesn’t have to do with down payment, it has to do with how much loan can they carry with their income. Get more ‘liberal’ with how loans are qualified, and the prices go up — and another bubble.

Participant
Interesting info, SD Squatter. What’s surprising to me is that we (apparently) had greywater systems that were available in 1982…and nothing was mandated for all the new building since then??? That’s insane. We’ve always had droughts in California; why aren’t greywater (and solar!) systems mandated for new homes and buildings?
I lived in a house that had a greywater system in it since about 1968 (at the foot of the mountains north of LA). It was installed after construction, but was easy to install because of raised floor construction. With slab, it is a completely different story.
As for why it is not mandated? I can’t answer other than maybe the builders don’t want to shell out more for something they can’t use to increase their asking price.

Have you shot the Sig .357 round? Its a cannon… Problem is I cant control it. At 75 feet I am all bull-eyes with my .40… I put that .357 barrel in it and just hitting the black is difficult… Its a mean round for sure but if you cant hit anything with it…BTW I shoot the P226 with interchangeable barrels…
CE
I think you may be ‘anticipating’ the shock, so you pull it. Might get better with practice, but you are right about ‘cannon’. I suspect that your first shot ever with the 357 was on, but afterwards you started ‘anticipating’ the recoil. You are using the P226 – so you must be using long/normal barrel. Can you try ‘dead resting’ the front of the barrel against a shot bag?

I primarily like the first two. There is a good CC version of a Sig .357 auto. Fires a real funky looking cartridge, but don’t underestimate it. That Sig is often used by the Secret Service (P229) instead of the 9mm (Conceals better and is actually partially armor piercing). That said, can’t carry a gun everywhere these days. Krav maga is also very good for fitness/exercise — and a good way to vent frustrations (Guess that Japanese girl was frustrated, or did you just say something wrong to her scaredy?)

Participant
I always enjoy your posts, ucodegen. You seem to have a lot of knowledge and experience in a variety of technical fields. It’s always fun to learn from your posts.
Thanks. I try to add constructively. I have done, learned and read much. Now it is time to start passing it on.I have a theory, that seems to have been backed up by history. Man’s evolution increased dramatically when written language was developed. Unfortunately, the priesthood kept most of that to itself. When printing presses with movable type came along (thanks Gutenburg), it allowed the printed word to reach the masses, and Man’s collective knowledge increased even more dramatically. This allows the older generation to pass its knowledge down collectively to the younger generation, which allowed the younger to benefit without having to go through inventing/discovering or developing it (which takes considerable time). I just hope the next generations have the wisdom to apply the knowledge.
NOTE: Not saying that you are of the ‘younger generation’.. I guess getting older, one starts thinking of such things particularly when certain ‘young ones’ in the family decide to take a less than healthy and productive path in life.
