ParticipantNotice of Defaults (NOD) are recorded in the county they are issued. I assume you have your landlords name. Plug it into the recorded document search and see what it comes up with.

Of course he might own the property in an LLC or corporate name – you can figure that out by plugging in your parcel # (Click on parcel # on the menu on the left.) You can get your parcel # by plugging in your address on Zillow – it’s under the info about the home.
If you think your landlord has stopped paying, I’d make it a habit to check the county records once a week. If you bookmark the link it takes less than a minute.
You can see if your landlord paid their property taxes here
http://trweb.co.clark.nv.us/Public records are our friends. 😉

ParticipantI have to agree with sdrealtor. They are lots that range from 1/4 acre up, a few blocks from the beach. Most of the sales that have prices under $1million are 2003 or earlier. 2 of the lots are closer to 1/2 acre… which for coastal/beach area is HUGE.
I put in a minumum of 1/4 acre and only found 3 listings between Birmingham and Santa Fe, west of I-5. The ranged from about 1.5 to 2Million.
It’s the lot size combined with location. Construction is relatively cheap compared to the dirt… dirt with that location.
Would I pay it? No. But it’s consistent with the area.

Participant
Dowries aside, traditionally the brides family has paid more for the pair bonding ceremonies and rituals in our culture. The engagement ring, being seen as part of that may may not have been enough to tip the scales of economic equality in favor of the brides side. This is in response to the part of the OP’s question. “What does the groom get of equal value in return.” Now, everybody does what they want. That’s cool.
Hijack, sort of.
This is another area that is a huge waste of money… these $30-50k weddings. How many couples spend HUGE sums on a party that lasts a few hours. And the catering industry is taking advantage – they typically charge more per plate for a wedding than any other kind of event. We did a small wedding in San Diego (where my family lived), then a bigger party at a catering hall in Philly (where we were living at the time.) Including travel, the honeymoon, the dress (made by my best friend!), flowers, everything… it was less than 6k. Like I said – that included travel and the honeymoon – as well as feeding 100 folks.
The catering hall in Philly tried to up the price when they realized it was semi-wedding related. By $20/plate. But we held them to the contract, pointing out that we’d been married for 5 weeks by the time we had the party.
The wedding industry is a total rip-off. But families spend huge sums.
