ParticipantYour kidding about them moving Las Colinas, right?
NO neighborhood wants a prison in their backyard. It’s already in Santee – and it seems extremely unlikely that it will be moved to someone elses backyard. NIMBYism will prevent it. Where are they going to move it? It has to be central enough to get to the 3 courthouses in the county (downtown San Diego, El Cajon, North County). Santee fits that bill.
I think the people of Santee need to be comfortable with Las Colinas – they’re going to coexist as long as we need a womens detention center.
Santee is nice enough. I’m not a Santee basher. Las Colinas wouldn’t be a deciding factor if I were looking there. One of my extended family is looking at REOs out there.

ParticipantI’d be curious about that transaction. Not saying anything funny went on – but it strikes me as a VERY low price if the house didn’t have any serious (expensive) issues.
I’ve been seriously looking at Clairemont for multi-unit type properties (duplexes)… and they’re smaller overall square feet, same number of beds/baths… They are selling/closing higher than that. I’ve also been looking at rent in Clairemont pretty closely. Craiglist is a good way to get an idea of rents being asked… A quick check just now found that rents for 4br houses in clairemont rent for 1800-2400ish… depending in finish, whether they’re on a canyon (this one isn’t) etc.
Whoever purchased it got a good deal. But I don’t think it was a typical deal. Like I said – I’ve been tracking Clairemont. I think jpinpb has been too. I’d be curious what she thinks.

You’re one of my favorite folks on this board. I like FLU’s idea of getting a tape recording of your wife saying to go for it. That’s your cover if/when she changes her mind. She’s obviously intelligent – she got through med school… She may not regret this decision the way so many of the Piggs assume will happen. (And I think JP, CAR, and myself tend to blow the stereotype of how women react only on emotion.)I like outtamojo’s suggestion to plan for zombie defense.
The money you are putting as a downpayment – do you get $200/month return on it? That’s the return you’ll be getting if you buy this – since you’ll be spending $200 less per month. That’s before any tax advantages that may or may not happen.
And – if this ends up causing marital discord in the future – there’s always the casita. (So make sure you address the zombie defense issues of the casita as well as the main house.)
