ParticipantDuring college I was broke (I was a student!) – but needed birth control pills. They weren’t covered my my student insurance and cost $30/month. I used to make an annual trip and get a years supply for myself.
Exact same pills – same manufacturers/pharmaceutical companies. Same packaging. The only difference is the instructions (that no one reads) were in Spanish.
A friend was skeptical – but I showed her a monthly pack I had from a US pharmacy – (which cost $30 back then) and a pack of the same prescription from a Tijuana pharmacy (which cost $5). They were IDENTICAL. She came with me on the next annual pilgrimage for inexpensive birth control. $300 savings a year is HUGE for a college student.
I guess, in hindsight, I was trafficking drugs across the border. Yikes.

ParticipantI’m with sdduuuude here. I live in UC and a lot of the kids who attend Curie, with my kids, are from Clairemont – they choiced in. Based on anectdotal evidence it must be VERY doable. Probably 20% of my kids classmates live in Clairemont.
If the choice thing doesn’t work for you, but you pick Clairemont – consider public/charter schools like Muir – it’s a K-12 school over in the Mt. streets… I have friends who send their kids there – and LOVE it.
For location/price/etc Clairemont is a good value.
Clairemont doesn’t have “new” houses… but many have been fixed up very nicely. Since you’re not looking for the 3500 sf mcMansion – you’ll find a lot of 1500-2200 sf houses in Clairemont on bigger lots. And commute to La Jolla is easy.
I also agree with AN – I used to think of Mira Mesa schools as being crappy… But based on things he posted, I went and re-looked at it… They’re pretty darn good, these days. Not perfect – but a lot better than they used to be.
When I first got out of college I lived downtown (before it was trendy) and commuted to Oceanside. It was a reverse commute – 40 miles, 40 minutes… But I swore I’d NEVER commute more than 30 minutes each way again. If I wanted to go to dinner with friends I had to factor in the time to commute home, time to primp, time to get back out again… and would end up having to leave early just to make it work. Soooo not worth it.

Participantslight hijack… I don’t think the tradtional views of liberal or conservative applies here on Piggington…
At least fiscally, this entire community skews very conservative. Personal responsibility runs VERY strong here among regular posters. Even though some of us are pretty “liberal”, politically, and others are more “conservative” politically.

ParticipantIs it a townhouse or a single cvmom would be moving to?
I assumed a single with similar mello-roos and HOA. (She said a few blocks away.)
As far as property tax… cvmom – if you or your husband are over 55 – you can transfer your prop 13 tax rate to the smaller house because it is a lower price. (Can’t transfer it to a higher priced place, has to have one owner be over 55.)
Given you have kids in school – odds are you and hubby aren’t old enough to qualify – but since our household qualified – perhaps yours does. (I got married later, and married someone even older than me.)
