ParticipantI suspect the house is kind of beat. Per the remarks and also the comments on the history page for that property it’s been a rental. The owner is a realtor who seems to put it on the market whenever it’s vacant – with a deadline he/she’ll re-rent it if no offers. But paint and carpet are cheap fixes relative to the overall cost.
I have a friend who lives at the other end of Robbins in the same model. His house was added onto a bit by the previous owner, but, ironically, they don’t use the added on section. My son’s best friend lives on the same block (different model). It’s a pretty nice, family oriented street. Only downside I see is that Curie is less walkable because of the big hill. (My friends drive to the top of Lipmann then walk from there.)

ParticipantAfter a week long vacation I came back to this monster long thread.
A couple of thoughts.
* I agree with everything CAR said. The bailouts actually hurt us, longterm. We’d have been better off without them.* I’m troubled that someone who has no financial hardship thinks it’s morally ok to just stop paying. I, personally, couldn’t do it. I’m sure I’ll be called a ball-less bitch for admitting that I like to honor my word and contractual obligations.
* I keep thinking of the contractor I’m in litigation with. He received his NOD on his house in Oct. His NOT in Dec. He’s had 2 extensions on his trustee sale. He doesn’t qualify for HAMP because his loan’s too high. Yet he’s living rent free. I actually have a slight bit more sympathy for him since he’s faced financial hardship (contracting sucks these days)… But I still feel strongly that he shouldn’t get free rent. It bothers the crap out of me that my tax dollars are helping subsidize people who have the capacity to meet their contractual obligations but selfishly choose not to.
Bill – what you’re doing is legal. In my book, it’s not moral.

ParticipantJP – so glad it wasn’t worse. I hope you heal up quickly and without complications.
I hear what you’re saying about manual transmission… My current car is my first car that isn’t stick – only because it’s variable transmission hybrid… doesn’t come in a stick. I also call b-s on Brian’s comment about women and manual transmissions… I know more men that don’t know how to drive stick than women… Maybe it’s just the crowd I hang with.
My best friend had a miata for years – even had it shipped to Italy when she lived there for 2 years so she’d have a fun ride on the auto-strada. She now drives a Suburu WRX wagon and does some pretty intense road rallies with it. Loves the performance. It’s styling isn’t sexy -but it handles well and can fit a mountain bike and luggage in the back.
My sister has a mini cooper and LOVES it. I drove it when we did a road trip last year – definitely a fun drive.
