ParticipantI think our society is going to have to restructure back to the old ways… As parents age, they move in with their children. The family takes care of each other.
I don’t see this is a negative. It has value for the adult children and the grandchildren. As some of you know – I’m living it. My in-laws live in a small “casita” granny flat in our backyard. Their expenses are lower because of it, and my kids learn that family takes care of family and get quality Grandma time.
And the way American’s, in general, are NOT saving for retirement… I suspect a lot of people will not be retiring (and therefore still paying in taxes).
It’s ironic they put Florida in the group. They’ve actively marketed for seniors to move to Florida – best estate tax laws (state level), best services… It’s a growth industry for the state…

ParticipantWhen I was looking for rental properties several months ago (so the data is stale) the rates got dramatically better at 25-30% down and higher.
There were loans for smaller downs – but they were a lot more expensive.
If you just want to get an idea of the difference in rates you can play around on aimloan.com. If you decide to pull the trigger – definitely shop rates.

This one especially. I have coworkers who did cash out refi’s to pay off their consumer debt – because it made the interest on that debt tax deductable. Pretty sad to think they were getting tax deductions on interest of debt accrued through vacations and restaurant meals…UCGal

ParticipantWe had rats in our yard. We’d see them running along the fence. Then we started construction on our granny flat. Bulldozing the trees/shrubs they lived in pretty much drove them away. (Extensive grading in the project). Construction has been over for more than 2 years and they haven’t returned…
Kind of an extreme approach, I’ll admit.
