ParticipantIs your lot zoned for mult-family or will you be removing the existing smaller home? Never mind – I just read that you’re keeping the existing house.
The 30 feet high is part of the code to protect views, etc. They are very strict about it. One of the contractors we interviewed talked about having to measure to the inch to get the railings on top of his roof deck within that 30 feet. Just squeaked in… and yes – the inspectors specifically measured that.

ParticipantI haven’t ruled out encouraging my kids to go into a “trade” if they look like they aren’t interested in anything career oriented for college.
I could totally see one or the other becoming and HVAC specialist, or a plumber.
My husband is on a lot of big commercial jobsites. (He’s an architect.) He regularly observes that the plumbers are the richest guys on the site. Often richer than the GC and even, sometimes, richer than the developer.
Getting trained for skilled trades is not a bad way to go.

Every 50-70 years the world goes through technology pyridine shifts, (guns, steamships, railroads, electricity, cars, airplanes, computers etc…)
These shifts always result in dislocations and disruptions.Right Now we are going through a new one “AUTOMATION”
This is the real story.
pyridine – so a chemical uses as a solvent or reagent is going to save the world?

ParticipantSvelte – that explains the flummoxed responses, post election. They didn’t count on “urban” voters, and women voters.

You know UCGal – I fall into that category myself. And ironically, it was probably on the more important elections than the big ticket items I was well versed on.
Many of the OC city council races, school boards and college districts have ‘winners’ that are making major choices for those area with as little as 6000 votes and often as few as 12K-14K votes.
I heard you. It’s hard getting enough information on school board, judges, community college board, etc candidates.
Even on the bigger races the margins are super narrow. I’m in the 52nd congressional district and they still can’t call it – less than 3000 votes apart and still 160k of absentee ballots to count.UCGal

Just saying.
Note to self – a box of ding dongs, foil wrapped, might make a good funny christmas gift for her.
UC,
I never saw a ding dong not in a foil wrapper, you might have compared the ding dong to the Hostess chocolate cupcakes that were sold in the two pack? As a kid I loved them all and usually got one packed in a lunch for school. The real treat was when a Hostess Pie was in my lunch.
If you buy the 2 pack that’s sold at 7/11 or similar, no foil wrapping. I guess they assume both ding-dongs will be consumed at one time.
Here’s an example of a package that would have foil-free ding dongs (which don’t taste as good.)

Participantlol – I posted this story in another thread.
This woman is clearly an idiot. She’s in AZ which went for Romney by 54%. Does she really think 1 vote more for Romney would have changed the electoral college results?
Total idiot who can’t do math, doesn’t understand the system, etc… Gotta love America.

What did they say in Hitchhikers Guide? Oh yeah….

ParticipantOr they could implement Simpson Bowles.
A majority of the committee voted for it – but it needed 60% to be sent automatically to congress. Our former Veep candidate, Paul Ryan, was on the committee and voted against it, btw.Talk about spreading the pain – Simpson Bowles did that.

Participant
He mistakenly made payments to the university — what happened to THAT money: it didn’t just evaporate. Someone was a gonef here.
I’m surprised that he doesn’t just bug out and head back to his birth country — I’d be surprised if they’d extradite a native-born citizen and he could live very cheaply there.
I read and reread that section (which was poorly written). He didn’t make payments for the student loans in question (which were only a part of his total student debt.) The student loans in question were $50k, and he had another $50k in other student debt.
Presumably the payments to the university were for this other debt.He also had quite a path to becoming a dentist… was a bit of a perma-student… Got a masters in public health before starting the dentistry program. That increased his debt load some, I’m sure.
