Comparing teaching to “hard work” and rought with liability is a joke when you look at the jobs in the private sector.
I’m an engineer, not a teacher.
That said – done right, teaching is a lot harder. It’s not just mastery of subject matter. That’s the easy part. The teachers that I respect regularly put in 80+ hour weeks. And also are continuing to take courses, even though they’ve maxed their educational pay steps – to enhance their skill set.
Unfortunately, not all teachers fit that model. Some have not kept up with teaching techniques, computer literacy, etc. It’s not an age thing – it’s a complacency or striving for excellence thing. This is true in the private workforce also. Some folks excel – others coast…

ParticipantIt just occurred to me that you might be talking about the rentals that are part of the senior community just east of there. This used to be one large “active living” senior community called “Leisure Life” (UC old timers still call it that) Now it’s La Jolla Del Rey and Town Park Villas. I think they’re owned by the kids of the original owners. They’ve been tearing down the old low rise townhouse style apartments and replacing them with 3 story new construction. I think they’re about half way through the construction process.
Those rentals run from Governor on the North – Gullstrand/Kantor and then Pavlov from half way between Erlanger and Kantor.
It’s 55+ so if you’re worried about renters who are riff-raff… you’ll only get the older riff-raff… LOL

$380k for a 3/2 with 1296 sf. But… It was built in the early 60’s and some people only want newer homes. It’s close enough to me that I walk my dog through this area fairly regularly. The downside of this house is that, well, you might run into me walking or biking my dog.
It’s only common wall is in the garage. It’s got really nice common green space – and this particular twin home has a canyon view. Pennant Village has a pool/rec center. I have a few friends who live over there.
And it’s in the Curie boundaries.
Hello UCGal,
That’s actually one of the homes I’m considering. The only issue I had was it looks like there are rentals close by that could hurt the value. But I guess that’s why it’s affordable in the first place. The HOAs of $300 put it out of my budget but it’s close!Do your friends like these homes? Guessing yes. Do you know if these units have AC? Since they’re older I’m guessing no but that’s probably something I can add at a later date. I’ll put it down on mjy “to view list” in UC.
Unless AC was added after the fact – they don’t have AC. I live within a few blocks and don’t have AC either… so to me, that’s not a deal breaker.
A friend’s mom lives in the 2 story townhomes at the bottom of the hill – she loves it. One of my son’s classmates lives there and we’ve been over for playdates. The bedrooms are small and the part of the backyard that is “yours” is limited… Those are the downsides. It’s probably half owner occupied, half rented. It’s not a rental community per se… all the units are owned individually so no common rental management.
There are really nice foot paths through there that people walk their dogs, kids bike and scooter on, etc… It’s a very friendly community – I’ve met a lot of the owners and their dogs when I’m walking my dog.
Different units have been updated to differing extents. Good friends rented there before purchasing on the other side of Robbins. Their rental had older windows and a few maintenance issues. But many of the homes I’ve seen have been redone with new windows, doors/etc… This gives me the impression that the HOA works with people rather than against them. (I have a friend who was prevented from replacing his heater by an HOA that could not approve any models available. He had to sue his HOA.)
