ParticipantI have a family member who was a social working in a prison, then later a nurse in a prison.
Her brother was a corrections officer for the state of AZ for 18 years (till he started getting death threats that he had to take seriously, and not just from former inmates).
He is currently working for a private corrections facility. AZ has a lot of these. Texas has even more.
He has never made the kind of money described here. But then again, he was working in AZ. Sure he had overtime pay – but he also had expenses (weapons, right suits, he was certified as a fire officer – so he had to have that gear.)
The hours suck. Period. It’s not a 9-5 job.
They also assign you to new prisons periodically – so it’s kind of like the military – you get relocated every 4-5 years. Which means uprooting your family, changing your kids school, etc. And the places aren’t always desirable locales. Lets face it – they don’t build prisons in places like Carmel Valley. He’s probably spent the most time in Yuma and Florence… Not exactly places he would have chosen to live if it weren’t for his job.
Now some info I dug up on CA corrections officers. I thought CA Renter made a good point about “if it’s such a great job – why don’t we all apply”.
– The starting pay is not that exceptional. $45,288/year to start. Sure, that’s more than some other jobs.
– You must pass regular drug tests.
– You must pass a background check.
– You must have a clean criminal record.
– They give preference to Vets – so non-military folks have to work that much harder.
– You have to pass the written test.
– You have to have fully correctable vision. Also – color blindness disqualifies you.
– You have to pass the academy.http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/Career_Opportunities/POR/COIndex.html
Personally – after hearing the stories of my family members, and seeing what it’s done to them… Not enough money in the world to make me work in that environment. I’d rather collect aluminum cans from trash cans. I’d be saner. It’s a tough job.

ParticipantIsn’t this just a new term for agnosticism?
As an agnostic I always explain that I’m not certain enough to reject all religion outright – but am uncomfortable with the conflict between science and traditional religions. In my view, science wins. Plus there’s that whole faith thing… My sister just says I haven’t been “blessed with faith” and is praying for me.

Given that 9/11 happened on 9/11/2001, there weren’t any further terrorist attacks on US soil during the remainder of Bush’s terms, either. I’m sure that the math escapes you, but that means Bush actually accrued more time than Obama without incident.
I’ve been staying out of the politics of this. But have to jump in here.
2 pretty serious “terroristic attacks” come to mind immediately.
The Anthrax attack. Remember, we still don’t know who did this. People died. People were TERRIFIED. Terrified over a sustained period of time.
The other one that immediately comes to mind is the DC Snipers. Again – people were TERRIFIED. Again, over a sustained period of time. Afraid to go to Home Depot etc… People were hiding in their houses. Malvo got the death sentance BECAUSE it was considered an act of Terror, legally.
Granted – neither were committed by muslim extremists from other countries (as far as I know)… but both fully qualify as terrorist attacks.
There are a lot more incidents, some thwarted… but those two are biggies that count.
I’m not defending Bush or Obama. Not giving credit to one “side” or the other. Unlike Brian, I don’t see this as a team thing where you pick a team to root for and ignore any faults of that team.
And yes, Allan, I’m a liberal. Feel free to attack me on that basis. Usually you offer fact filled posts… not this time.

Bad idea. They both wear uniforms. They don’t do the same jobs.
I agree. Cops do everything from parking tickets and crowd control to investigating murders and robbery rings. They work on gang control. Heck – look at how many different types of cops there are: traffic, homocide, vice, etc…
Firefighters are about extinguishing the fire with the least loss of life and and property. A completely different skill set. A firefighter has to know the combustibility of various materials, the structural integrity of a burning building in case they have to go rescue someone on a higher floor, etc… That’s a lot different than investigating a murder or writing a traffic ticket.
