So strange. I wonder is the danger really higher or just the perception of the danger? If the former then that is a huge societal failure – for things to be much worse 30 years later…
Its the perception, for better or worse the media has hyped us into a kind of mass paranoia.
Not sure its a good thing or bad, it just is.
When you step back I find it very interesting how easily the Media manipulates society.
The world in general is much safer than it was 60-70 years ago but most people would never believe that if you tell them.

ParticipantIntel is one of the few companies that acquires a company and does not seem to immediately close down the local facility and transfer the few people it needs up north.
Anyway from what I have seen in L.A.
During the last Tech bubble SV companies bought up most of the local mid size companies (competition) down here and closed them down, There were a lot more Tech companies in L.A. before the boom than after.
It was somewhat devastating to the Tech Job market in L.A. it took a long time to recover.

ParticipantLets hope it does not happen.
But I think if you had a lot of options in QCOM it might not be such a bad thing if it were to occur.
In other companies I have been with, they usually just make all options vested and cut you a check.
This is one of those things that works better if your Job title starts with a “C”.

ParticipantI have heard it said that the Movie version of L.A. is more real than the real L.A. LOL.
Everything looks better at the right angle and light and more real with the right intensity.

ParticipantI feel really fortunate for having been born and raised in SoCal,
I am sure I would not have had the experience of surfing etc.. while I was growing up or the career opportunities I have enjoyed if I was raised in most other Cities/states.
Anyway My two cents on that.

ParticipantNo matter where you go, there you are.
Seems almost zen like.

ParticipantI can honestly say I can never remember ever being picked up or dropped off at school.
It was the Bus or the bike from day 1 as far as I can remember.
If we were involved in some team sports most of us walked or road our bikes to the field.
If for some reason we stayed after school we walked home.
Both Parents worked, neither got home until well after 5:00 PM.

It’s also pretty common for kids over 8 or 9 to walk or take public transport to school, and travel to other countries with friends by age 16 or 17. Helicopter parenting isn’t as common as in the US — kids grow up more independent.
If kids were raised today like most of the boomers grew up, they would have the parents locked up for neglect LOL.
There was no day care in those days.

ParticipantThat was one thing about working in the Europe or the Asia Office.
NO FREE COFFEE !!!
Inhumane I tell you.
Also the Free bread they give you at most chain restaurants in Cal. these days.

ParticipantYea, don’t think I want to be within a hundred miles of that LOL.
But maybe someone else here has some experience with this type of thing (sounds complex and costly).

Participant
Doesn’t HI also have some serious mountains? Is there any settlement in the interior?
There are some (very) small towns and both Maui and the big Island have some serious mountains (snow ski year round)
And you can pick your climate, just go up or down the mountain.
Could be nice I guess.
the other Islands are kind of hot and humid in the interior most of the time, then you will also need some serious bug begone as well.

Participant
I see HI is also on the list. We’ve spent a lot of time there, and have considered moving, but several friends who have moved over there have ended up coming back to San Diego for various reasons.
Summer all year long in HI (that’s the complaint I have heard from a few people I know who moved then moved back)
Also not much to do unless you’re really really into water sports. For me I think SD has better weather than HI because it is generally cool at the beach most all year long and I like to walk on the beach.
Walking on (or along) the beach in HI is kind of too hot in the day time.

ParticipantMaybe we should put a requirement that every newcomer bring a acre foot of water or something.
