As a woman, I get very irritated w/other women who claim to be “modern” and independent and self-reliant yet, when it is to their advantage, expect the “old-fashioned” perks of having a man pay for everything…
oh, and marion, trust me my comments are not motivated by jealousy or difficulty getting a date…I am in a long term relationship, make over 100K a year and DO NOT judge my friends/relationships by how much they are willing to spend on me…

tazParticipanttemecula guy –
glad to hear it’s not just me who loves Bill Cowher’s jutting chin and (inadvertent?) spitting!
tazParticipantI’ve lived in SD for 14 years now…never even tempted to become a Chargers fan…but that might change if Bill Cowher (former coach of my beloved Steelers) takes over the reins…
September 26, 2007 at 10:18 AM in reply to: Nice place but never in a million years could I afford it yet. #85966tazParticipantlittle lady you reap what you sow…
all you have to do to see why some people “attacked” you is to simply read some of your old posts…as someone else said, get a life…
September 25, 2007 at 10:49 AM in reply to: What does it take to sell a place in this market? #85829tazParticipantMy 70 year old mother recently moved into a senior (rent controlled) apartment. If you are considering that option for your mother, I suggest you scout out and identify SEVERAL acceptable locations/facilities and get her name on their waiting lists NOW! My mom and I discovered that the demand for these places is high and accordingly the wait list is LONG, it took close to 2 YEARS for my mom to get her place.
tazParticipantJES makes the accurate (imho anyway) observation that our “culture” has been reduced to “mass consumption.” While I personally don’t mind secularism’s rise, it saddens me that Americans seem to have abandoned an active “public” realm for a consumption based private realm. Everyone retreats to their McMansions after shopping in the big box stores, never mind working to get a real public library downtown, more public parks in our older neighborhoods and a truly functional public transportation system.
In response to the OP’s question, some of San Diego’s hidden gems for me are: the summer “Concerts in the Park” series in Mission Hills (other neighborhoods have similar events I believe, e.g. Scripps Ranch and University Heights), Hornblower bay cruises, hiking in the Cuyamacas, Birch Aquariam, Balboa Park and its many museums, the Hotel del Coronado, and the annual airshow at MCAS Miramar.
tazParticipantActually, Guam would be more expensive, just like Hawaii and other islands – because of the cost to ship in all the raw materials needed for construction, combined with a finite supply of land…you get the picture. Also, in Hawaii much of the land is held in fee simple by a few families/plantations. Land is essentially “rented” via long-term leases.

tazParticipantIt’s hardly fair to compare Costco and Walmart. Yes, both are big box retailers, but Costco pays its workers a fair wage and has a generous benefits package–unlike Walmart, which pays next to nothing and gives its employees classes on how to sign up for government aid programs like food stamps. Any one who’s ever been or had family who are “blue collar” workers should avoid the WalMarts of the world – Give me Costco any day over Walmart!

tazParticipantEven with an alley design (which I prefer immeasurably over the ugly “snout houses”) the garages generally hold at least two cars. Do that many families out there actually have 3+ cars?!? Do they really NEED that many? I live in an older neighborhood with alleys (Kensington) and I don’t notice a huge problem with all the street parking being taken…
