There will be more and more people who choose to live without their own cars. It depends on the car share buiness models to develop. But I see more people relying on uber and Lyft already.
They may save on auto insurance, car maintenance and depreciation, but they may need to increase their exterminator bill as they bring extra friends home on their clothes…

I have been watching the Covid-19 outbreak and watching the ‘death rate’. In China the death rate is about 2345/76288 = 3.0% of known infections. Iran having real bad Covid-19 problem; their death rate is significantly higher than China at 12/61=19.67% (was 12/47=25.5%). Italy 6/229 = 2.62%, South Korea at 7/833 or 0.84%(must be the garlic). Total average is about 2622/79407 = 3.3%. NOTE: numbers are quickly changing.

Summary: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/summary.htmlAge statistics on death rate:
- 80+ years = 14.8%
- 70-79 years = 8.0%
- 60-69 years = 3.6%
- 50-59 years = 1.3%
- 40-49 years = 0.4%
- 30-39 years = 0.2%
- 20-29 years = 0.2%
- 10-19 years = 0.2%
- 0-9 years = no fatalities
Great analysis u. Thanks for posting it.
It makes the news headlines look a little like sensationalism.
svelteParticipantWow, very insightful. Thanks flu.
svelteParticipantIf the numbers don’t stop growing in the next couple of months, it will probably affect attendance at the 2020 Olympics in Japan, scheduled to start in July.
svelteParticipantHoly freakin christ I hope nobody on here actually shorted Tesla…they were up to $961/share at 3:30 today!
From a low of $178/share on June 3, 2019!
What rational reason can there be for that?
Sure they showed a profit and it looks like the tide may be turning for them, but let’s get real here!
I think the most logical explanation is that the short sellers were forced into a “short squeeze” corner where they all had to buy stocks at the same time to cover the shares they borrowed last summer…and that is causing the price to jump.
Bet it comes down over the next few weeks.
Man some folks got burned very very badly on this.
If only I’d been brave enough to put all my cash in buying stock at $178. But you know what? I would have sold way before now anyway. Mind games!
svelteParticipantA few comments about Tesla solar roof:
1) Notice they chose the simplest roof configuration possible. A straight gable roof with zero valleys. Don’t see many of those in San Diego.
2) I also notice these are very glossy and straight-edged panels, Seems like they showed a more traditional roof tile look when they first unveiled the solar roof a year or two back. Or maybe my memory is bad.
3) These tiles look very slippery – good luck to any repairman that should need to get on your roof for vent repair, etc.
4) Don’t know if you caught it, but he said the entire roof is made up of “solar CAPABLE panels”. Do you know why he said that? Because there are california laws about where on the roof you can put solar panels! Back when I had mine installed, there had to be a 3ft setback from all roof edges and ridges. I just looked it up and now they’ve relaxed it a bit, but it is still significant:
https://www.renvu.com/Learn/New-California-Setback-Rules-July-1st-2018
If you look closely, those non-solar panels along the edge aren’t 18 in wide, so I bet that means that the first actual solar tile along all edges won’t be active either. That means a lot of inactive tiles!
5) One of the things I like about my panels sitting up off the roof is all the heat generated from the sun hitting the black panels doesn’t radiate directly into my attic…there is an air buffer that can dissipate the heat before it transfers. In fact, I actually thought my attic fan (which activates when attic reaches 120 degrees or so) was broken because it hasn’t come on it a couple of years. However, it did kick on once recently so I am thinking the solar panels with the air gap have actually reduced my attic temp!
I’m wondering how hot that guy’s attic is gonna get with a shiny black surface sitting right on his roof’s plywood.
6) Just imagine the number of electrical connectors required to join all those tiles. All of those connections getting beat by the heat in the attic or on the roof. How many of those do you think are going to go bad over the course of 25 years? Even if they are under warranty, there is still downtime waiting for Tesla to repair them, and let’s hope that one bad connection doesn’t disable all panels downstream…
Is a solar roof a good idea? Yes, I think so. I’m just not convinced all the drawbacks have been considered and addressed.
svelteParticipantIn my younger days I went the retaliation route on a few folks.
The older and wiser (and more valuable) I got, I decided it was much safer to take the high road. That way if things get really really nasty, my hands are clean and they can’t come after my assets. And win anyway.
I have used video cameras – home and auto – successfully to defend myself. Those things are worth every penny I paid for them. They’ve paid for themselves actually.
svelteParticipant
Speaking of bathrooms, and unrelated. In my crude survey…. 8.5 out of 10 women hate this new gender neutral concept of bathrooms in California.
And this is a major reason the Equal Rights Amendment never passed. I’m serious. The anti-ERA crowd was able to convince many women that passing ERA would lead to unisex bathrooms.

svelteParticipantIn a 2019 Netflix special, Bill Gates said that the thing that held the most potential to kill millions of people was a pandemic, and thought a likely place for one to start would be a wet market in China.
How prophetic.
Bill Gates predicted coronavirus-type pandemic could ‘kill millions’ in 2019 Netflix documentary
svelteParticipant
Not only did I consent, I almost cried, so proud of my little girl, more so than when she graduated college at the top of her class. Watch it on TV and take the 10k was what she said and who says young people today are stupid, I beg to differ. So proud! The next generation will have Piggingtons.
That is great TG! Love hearing stories like this.
People have been saying the next generation is terrible since Aristotle’s time. It’s never been true.
Our kids chose basketball as their sport this year and I have to say, it is fun to watch kids play! Never a dull moment and I can actually see their playing improve week by week. There are very few sports where the improvement is evident on a weekly basis. It brings a smile to my face as I watch it.
Soccer, baseball, football, karate, I’ve watched the kids learn them all. None of them really all that fun to watch from the sidelines (to me) but basketball, that’s a whole nuther animal. Maybe it is because I get to sit so close to the action, I don’t know. But I find myself getting much more involved with the game. And they are super enthused about it…I’m hoping they stick with this one next year.
And yeah, I “watch” them learn. I would be a terrible teacher. I can’t play sports to save my soul. Not proud of that, but it’s a fact. No use denying it.
svelteParticipantWhat I’m really trying to figure out, and why I posted that article, is where things are heading…will interest rates stay low?
Will the low unemployment numbers ever lead to jumps in wages?
Are we near a cliff?
I need to map out the next decade as far as my employment, savings, and other plans and those are key data points for my decisions.
svelteParticipant
I remember some people on here arguing that inflation is through the roof, and that the government is lying to us and manipulating the numbers on both inflation and employment.
There is some manipulation going on with both of those numbers.
As the article points out, with unemployment at record lows, why isn’t the inflation rate going up? And why is the “new jobs” number almost 200K per month? Where are those people coming from?
https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/ces0000000001?output_view=net_1mth
And they’ve been dinking with the CPI calculation with lower readings as a result:
svelteParticipantReading your posts lately flu, you and I think a lot alike.
Our goal net worth is very similar, we’ve just chosen different paths for getting there.
Like you, the main reason I’m not going to retire before 65 (unless the cards happen to fall that way) is that I would prefer to stay under the work insurance until Medicare kicks in, and I’d just end up doing many of the things I’m already doing at work and getting paid for it. I don’t see myself sitting at home like a hermit, so I’d go out and interact – just like I’m doing at work. I enjoy my work, they pay me well, so why not stay awhile longer?
I took a few weeks off recently (too close to my caps!) and found that a lot of chores got offloaded to me from other family members (grocery shopping, drop off/pick up kids, errands, etc)…not exactly how I had envisioned spending my retirement. I’ll stay at work and get paid, thank you!
BTW, a co-worker recently pointed out to me that COBRA could be used to retire at 63.5 and still stay covered…hmmmm…
svelteParticipantSpeaking of commuting, has anyone else noticed traffic is heavier much earlier since Jan 1? Seems like everyone’s new years resolution was to get to work earlier.
Now even 6 AM doesn’t cut it.
By chance I had to go in an hour later one day last week and traffic was lighter than at 6 AM! I think all those folks shifted earlier…
Let’s see how long that resolution lasts. Will probably be like the gym…
