I think Josh’s tax plan is a great idea. I’ve never advocated a government outlawing too many kids, but giving incentives? That’s another story…
As for the 1.5% ain’t bad poster, I’m not too sure of his/her intelligence because they keep shooting themselves in the foot…worldwide population growth is 1.1% not 1.5…
So we’re adding 6 new Los Angeles basins worth of people every year, not 12. Still way too much for my blood.
Humans are in no danger of going extinct, I can tell you that. Population growth could turn negative and we’d still be fine. I’d actually like that.
svelteParticipant
Like Scaredy said If you’er rich maybe City life is good when you are older, if not so rich, probably not so much.
that Atlantic article I quoted above says that cities are mostly suitable for the wealthy and for poor immigrants.
The middle class is largely absent.
svelteParticipant
This was a trend that was started “before” the pandemic.
City is fine when young and single, not so much if you don’t fit that criteria.
This is also true!
https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/04/why-is-everyone-leaving-the-city/521844/
But large cities were making up for most of that out-migration through the in-migration of immigrants.
Given the current atmosphere, that is not as true as it was a couple of years ago.
What’s not clear to me whether the 23% leaving the city number can be maintained after a vaccine is developed.
svelteParticipant
OF COURSE 23% of people will say “I’m moving out” when their city is locked down and everything is closed. Let’s see what the survey results are after lockdowns are eased for a few months. A time of utter panic and chaos is recipe for bad data.
Totally agree that’s why I said let’s wait 12 months and see what the stats say then.
svelteParticipant
Actually “they” DO talk about it.
A few samples
https://grist.org/article/humans-cause-climate-change-do-we-just-need-fewer-humans/Excellent! Now if we can only get more of them talking about it so it hits the more popular news outlets…
But this is a start! Thanks for posting.
svelteParticipant
Good riddance, more for us.
One day, i will consider myself arrived when I can afford a pied a terre in Manhattan.
I don’t even need a doorman. A walk up without elevator would be ok.
Unless you are living on floors 1, 2 or 3 you are one weird dude.
svelteParticipant
Parking isn’t also a pain in the ass…
Over the last few years, there has also been a trend to closing off sidewalks for outdoor restaurant area and even taking away parking spots for restaurant seating. This past year parking was taken away for bike lanes and now entire streets are closing to traffic.
Maybe folks are saying enough is enough, I’m out…gonna live where the living is easy.
svelteParticipantWow! I just checked the listings in San Marcos…people are asking astounding prices! This wasn’t happening just a couple of weeks ago.
It will be interesting to see if these sell for anything near what they’re asking. Just amazing.
svelteParticipant
More and more people seem to be moving out of the city into the burbs. Retail numbers seem to suggest this as well.
“The Wall Street firm surveyed 1,000 city dwellers and 23% of them said they plan to relocate to the suburbs in the next 18 months.”
That is an astounding number.
I must admit that I expected a suburban migration as the younger generation aged, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect a quarter of the city population to want to leave. We’ll see if that lasts past 12 months…
svelteParticipant

Feds now buying individual Corp bonds. I can’t wait for them to announce that they will start buying all Robinhood portfolios which solely contain Hertz.
Ha!
Yeah, what’s up with people buying Hertz???
svelteParticipant

I think the problems people are focusing on are distractions to avoid dealing with the real issues in front of us. Overpopulation…
Josh
I am continually amazed at how many of the “save the planet” folks do not even MENTION overpopulation, or at least population growth.
That is the one thing that will do the most to preserve the planet in the long term, and the one thing that never leaves their lips.
This is a typical “they-don’t-talk-about-that” argument to dismiss man made climate change as an issue we need to deal with. “They don’t talk about that. They’ re talking about a lot of other things, but they don ‘t talk about that.”
It’s also an all-or-nothing argument where “until we deal with population, we can’t talk about climate change”.
In fact, there are lots of old and new technologies we can implement to have a positive impact. First off, provide birth control to all citizens of the world. That’s very easy to do, we just need the political will.
I don’t think it’s an either-this-or-that situation. There is no reason we can’t talk about, and do something about, both.
But I think we should be talking about the biggest issue if we’re talking about smaller issues. Not sure why it’s even a question.

OMG. Sounds horrible. 156M is sooo much worse than ~1.5%.
It is horrible.
svelteParticipant.
svelteParticipant
Divorce court might be the easier route.
