ParticipantAs much as I hate Blair for being a Poodle Dog (though sadly, I did vote for him in the 1997 election), you have to admit that the “you trap more flies with honey than with vinegar” policy worked.
Hostages are free, on both sides, everyone saved face.
What’s not to like?

ParticipantSeems a pity that, what with the new design, Zip still managed not to allow a ‘sort by Already Viewed’ button….(sigh).
There’s so many ways they could have really improved the site. I’m so not interested in the ‘realtive interest’ of a property, and yet I have to peer at the screen without my glasses on, to make out the puny 2pt type they use for the ‘x miles away from work’ at the very bottom.Good thing: other than the ‘x miles away’ type (see above) the new type size makes it easier to read (working from a 14″ Mac, sometimes the type was miniscule).
Bad thing: the “Already Viewed” button is now glommed into the main bar, making it even harder to tell if you’ve looked at the place or not.
Another bad thing: why used a totally missable grey for the “Saved in My Homes” button? Its guaranteed to be lost in your peripheral vision (which is monchrome) – why not use a green or a red to make it stand out.speedingpullet
ParticipantSimple – don’t read it then, bub.
This is, after all, the ‘off topic’ section….;-)

ParticipantYeah, I’ll take it!
But only to knock it down, build a modest 1600 sq ft house and relandscape the yard…speedingpullet
ParticipantThough, of course, if the windows really were Palladium, the cost would be much higher 😉
I get a kick out of the listings descriptions too – my favourites are where the writer waxes lyrical about the front door, landscaping, etc, then hits return before finishing the blurb, often with hilarious consequences.
Although, for sheer bad spelling, a recent listing described the ‘enetry way’ in glowing terms. Then, just for good measure, described it as an ‘enetry way’ two more times in the blurb…..
Maybe the MLS doesn’t have spellcheck?

ParticipantI’m seeing much the same here in L.A, Mexico Resident: I just ‘ran the numbers’ on all of my Inactive listings from Zip.
Of the 67 listings that went inactive since early June (when I started keeping track of them) only 5 have sold according to Zillow – and all at a lower price than the Original List Price – lowest a modest 1.75% and the biggest a whopping 29.5%.
I don’t know the historical % of sales, so don’t know if this sales data is low or high, but my gut feeling is that, at an average of 7.5% sales to inactives, this is low.OT BTW: just for fun – BRAVO is having a marathon of all last season’s ‘Million Dollar Listings’ on today….
speedingpullet
ParticipantI’m definatlely seeing more ‘inactive’ properties on my ZipRealty list over the last few days – up from roughly 1 a day (from around 80 houses in ‘my homes’) to 3 a day over the last 3 days. This is in westide L.A too, so not just a local SD phenomenon.
My bet is that the clocks going back has acted like a sort of alarm – those who absolutley have to sell will hang in there as best they can over the winter. Those who still have a little leeway will withdraw until Spring of 2007.

ParticipantHitchens is not crazed – often drunk and largley po-faced, certainly.
I just dislike him because even when he’s agreeing with you he looks like he still wants to punch you in the throat. He’s also a lapsed Socialist, as dangerous and opinionated as an ex-smoker when he gets on his high horse. On my ‘how long would I last stuck in an elevator with this person” meter he gets a 2 (1 being “shoot me now” and 10 being “I want to marry you and have your babies even if you are another woman”.
Andrew Sullivan? Don’t know him – although by the Transatlantic Accent I’d guess he’s another Fleet St Refugee. At least he can smile without smirking.
PS: if you want to see truly ‘shocking’, check out Keith Olberman’s newest rant over at YouTube re: John Kerry’s ‘Iraq’ botched joke, and the White House’s continuing misunderstanding of it.
Keith Olbermann
Hats off to the man – at least someone is still making political commentary, even if you disagree with him (which I don’t).speedingpullet
ParticipantHitchins is an eedjit.
Sadly, even having an English accent can’t stop you from being an ass sometimes.
He was on ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ a few weeks ago and irritated just about everybody on the panel with his humourless and pompous diatribes, and didn’t even have to good grace to stay on stage and shake hands at the end of the show.As for Kerry and his inability to tell even a scripted joke…it must seem like Manna from Heaven for the Republicans at this late stage. If they play it correctly they may still be dining out on it up to Polling Day. Pity that Kerry isn’t actually running for anything this time around, or the Dems would be in real trouble…;-)

ParticipantMy personal thought is that the bad driving/tailgating/lane hopping/failure to pay attention is another manifestation of the sense of entitlement we rail against all the time, except on the road, rather than in RE.
Having just returned from a 3000 mile trip in the US southwest, in an F150 wheelchair converted van, I still maintain that SoCal (esp L.A) driving is the worst I’ve ever seen.
Most prevalently seen with expensive cars (Lexus, Mercedes, Bimmers), as
a) what right do I have driving a slow van at all in a freeway (note: the van does 95mph with five people, heavy medical equipment and a wheelchair, as I proved on a particularly empty stretch of the I-15 north of Cedar City, UT)
and b) driving an expensive car means that you have more important business, hence need to get from A to B quicker by any means possible than other drivers.Every single friend who gets driven down the 405 from LAX to our house in Van Nuys has commented (often from the floor of the car) that L.A driving is the most insane they’ve seen. Even once i’ve explained the rules of the road to them (ie, there aren’t any) they still wonder how we do it without suffering catastrophic firey deaths every day.
Then, I take them out to Page, AZ. and show them the difference. up until then, they are convinced that US cars are not equipped with signals, because they’ve never seen them used in L.A.
Re: new building.
Haven’t been to the Southwest in 4 years, so was suprirsed to see how much new cookie-cutter stuff has been built on the I-40 east of Flagstaff. Even flagstaff itself is bigger. Wonder how many of these new tract homes will sell 60 miles from the nearest big town…speedingpullet
ParticipantIndeed – Knowledge is Power.

ParticipantWhat can you do?
All you really can do is to say that you think its a bad idea, but for the sake of your friendship, you’ll shut up about it now.
If she ever turns on you and says ‘why didn’t you talk me out of it?’, point out that you tried just that, but she didn’t want to listen. She’s an adult, and ultimately responsible for her actions. If she’s convinced that the market is going to go back up – and she’s among many who think so (at least amongst the majority of my friends, this is the mantra) – then nothing you say will dissuade her.
