ParticipantWouldn’t anyone put in charge of FNMA/FHFA by the Republicans be more cautious about lending? Ed DeMarco was a GOP appointee that was often criticized for his caution.
Whereas Mel Watt is much more eager to lend to the undeserving.
Also, isn’t the long-haul GOP plan to dismantle the GSEs entirely and take lending private?

Participant^^^
That’s a good thing.

ParticipantYou mean “national offense?”

ParticipantI don’t get the opposition to taxes. I’d be glad to pay a sizable chunk of my income in tax if I had a family, in exchange for certain guarantees.
(1) My kids get a decent public education no matter what happens to me
(2) My kids have access to secondary education at low cost
(3) My family has access to healthcare at low cost with minimal risk of medical bankruptcy
(4) Government retirement system (read: Social Security) remains well-funded
(5) Infrastructure and public transport systems are well maintained
(6) Things like the environment, food quality, and drug efficacy are well-regulated to prevent corporations harming the public. Also, working hours are regulated and vacation time is guaranteed as a matter of health and safety.Problem with the US isn’t our taxes are terribly high — it’s that we don’t get much back for the tax money spent. We waste it on homicide sprees abroad (aka, power projection) and abuse of our own citizenry (overpolicing, mass incarceration, war on the bugaboo of the week).

ParticipantFor a clear comparison…
Take your annual gross income without management fees or mortgage payments (rent – HOA – taxes – utilities – insurance).
Divide it by your purchase cost (price + repairs if any + closing costs).
What is that percentage?

ParticipantShould irredeemable parents also be allowed to beat their kids at will? Engage in honor killing?
spdrun
ParticipantYep. Better than letting fundie whackadoodles send their kids to a school that fills their heads with superstitions that have no place in the real world. Like creationism. Or global warming denial. Or not teaching kids how birth control works and where it’s available, so they get pregnant at age 16.
Public schools.
National standards.
Any school that doesn’t meet national standards should be subject to a Federal or State takeover till it does.Every American should be guaranteed a quality, free, and secular education. Parents shouldn’t be able to choose to fail to teach their kids about scientific concepts.

ParticipantI understand how charter schools work. I have no issue with them, assuming teachers are treated fairly (decent pay, good time off, etc).
I have a problem with vouchers, where a private school requires a large additional outlay.
But the best solution would be to ban private education on the primary and secondary levels and have strict national standards for the public schools.
No exemptions for Bible/Koran/Torah thumping idiots.
spdrun
ParticipantCharter schools, fully paid for by the government, make sense. If you’re a minority (or otherwise) who can’t afford private school, you’re given a voucher for $10,000, and private school costs $30,000 per year, you’re still fucked. With the added benefit that your public school gets even less funding.
No. Improve the public schools. Take them out of the hands of corrupt municipalities and put them under state or Federal control if they want a dime of funding.
spdrun
ParticipantLoL, how many kids do you have spd?
None, but I don’t want to pay tax to send some other idiot’s sprogs to a fundie Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc school where they’ll be taught what some superstitious freak wants them to learn, vs scientific facts. Then pay more for their welfare when they can’t get into college or get a paying job in the real world.
Ta hell with using gov’t money to pay for the idiocy of fundie freaks.
spdrun
ParticipantWhy should we celebrate a bunch of fundie fanatics not being burnt at the stake, being killed by Indians, or sinking in the middle of the Atlantic, as they richly deserved?
spdrun
ParticipantVouchers are horrible — the goal should be to make good, local, public education available to all Americans. Not to let public schools further deteriorate while giving parents vouchers, where they need to pay EXTRA money for a decent private school.
Also, vouchers play into the hands of religious asshats who don’t want their sproglets learning about evil-lution, globull warming, and birth control methods. Everyone should have a strong grounding in math, science, literature, history, etc without it being marred by their parents’ idea of some fruitcake fairy up in the sky.

ParticipantWhat I don’t like about Uber is that you can’t pay good, old-fashioned, cash.

ParticipantThe trolley lines work decently for the areas they serve. IMHO.
