ParticipantSpeaking theoretically:
I’d bet that there are nuclear weapons on CA soil, possibly controlled by people whose loyalties would be divided. Not to mention the ability to purchase such if it really came down to it.The genie has been out of the bottle for almost 67 years now.
But anyway, I could eventually see an un-contested breakup of the USA. It happened in the Soviet Union in the 90s, even though previous attempts had been violently repressed.

ParticipantWhy is socialism such a dirty word anyway? I’m a socialist on some issues, a libertarian on others, and I’m G-d damn proud of my views.

ParticipantKnowing the proclivities of the Mozilla foundation, this might very well be more open than the competing platforms. If we end up with a very open mobile platform, this might just be the gentle push needed to get Apple to finally bury the ghost of Stevie J. and cease micromanaging their walled garden.
I’d love to have something with the form factor of an iPad but with the power of a OS X Macbook. Real OS please, with a real file system capable of integrating seamlessly with existing business infrastructure, not iKloud Krap. And able to install any compatible app out of the box, not only the apps that some cult priests in Cupertino choose to bless.

ParticipantLet CA and other blue states secede and run their own affairs. Yeah, yeah, civil war. Different times now, and I doubt if DC would want to risk a nuclear civil war anyway.

ParticipantAre those your only two suggestions (magic or tax the rich)? If you say yes, then there’s no point going forward.
Personally, I’m for universal, public-option health care, paid for by a percentage tax on ALL incomes. But that’s just me.

ParticipantIronically, I bought my iPhone directly from AT&T, and got a device loaded with a severely gimped OS. Is that OK?

Participant(!) The street view on Google Maps looks like a giant ghillie suit.

ParticipantUm, jailbreaking is free if you do it yourself, and it isn’t hard to do. If you’re going voice-only, you could also go T-mo.

ParticipantWhy does the government need more and more and more funding year after year?
Because the liberals want it to actually provide useful services.
The conservatards, OTOH, bleed the coffers dry with things like the War on Drugs, incarcerating 1% of the population, and military adventures in Middle Eastern pestholes that aren’t worth a single cent. Personally, I’d be all for the people responsible for Iraq II being locked up for treason and perjury.
And yes, I realize that SD’s economy is heavily based on the military.

ParticipantRe: AT&T
You could acquire an iPhone that “fell from the truck” and only get voice service with it. Jailbreak and turn 3G data off entirely, only use data when you have WiFi.
PS – my next device will be Android. At least the user can actually decide which apps to install without playing the stupid jailbreak game, which gets old after a short while. iPhone is a great device, but still crippled by an ill old man’s vision of what it should and shouldn’t do.

ParticipantI actually generally do carry it when traveling domestically, since it provides a form of ID that doesn’t have address or much other personal info on it.

ParticipantNope, a passport card is just a credit-card-sized version of a US passport. A SENTRI card is something different.

ParticipantHow do you propose to pay for government services? Magic?
Printing money is an unpredictable tax, and unpredictable inflation is bad for business. Not to mention that it favors spenders over savers, and Americans save too little as it is.

ParticipantApart from the sh!tty SSD, it look like a decent all-round PC. Buy/beg/steal a bigger 2.5″ drive, upgrade, and run whatever you like on it.
