ParticipantAs far as working on cars being taboo, would it be that hard to throw someone out in the country a Ben per month for a nice large garage space or use of their barn?

ParticipantSomewhere out in the styxx like Fallbrook? ๐
Though if I really could work from anywhere, wanted culture, acreage, and nature, I’d likely buy in some small New England town west of Boston (MA). And keep a pied a terre in downtown Boston/Camberville, Manhattan, and/or a West Coast beach city.
With $2MM (= at least $4MM buying power), no need to keep your eggs in one basket. I’d also pick up some rentals to pay the expenses on everything else. Let some other bum-losers pay for your lifestyle!

ParticipantWhen you’re 15 min from the beach and 45 min from the mountains, why would you even care to bother with a “stinkation” in your back yard? That would be like going to Paris and spending the whole time in your hotel.
Kids are also super adaptable. My family’s ~1500 sf beach house seemed HUGE to my sister and I as kids.

ParticipantRemember that HOA fees cover at least some work that you’d otherwise do yourself. So it’s not zero vs the HOA fee. More like 50% of HOA vs the full HOA. This assumes a well-run HOA with adequate reserves.
Personally, HOA isn’t my cuppa tea unless it’s an apartment building, but one has to see things as they are.

ParticipantAs a apartment kid, I can’t say that I don’t sleep well, even with a bit of street and neighbor noise. And unbearable neighbors like the clowns who kept arguing at 3 am, get reported to the HOA and end up moving ๐

ParticipantA normal person sleeps 7 hr at least.
24 – 7 = 17
17 – 9 (for work and lunch) = 8
8 – 2 (for commuting) = 6
6 – 1 (for getting ready) = 5
5 – 1.5 (for other meals) = 3.5Not much left in the day for yourself and to enjoy those wide open spaces, is there?

Participant…So… what do you folks tell your kid when they ask you about politics…I mean, the last thing I want is for my kid to go to school and say, Daddy thinks Obama is a moron and Romney is a liar, and he thinks we are all doomed either way…
Who gives a aerial copulation if they do?
Last I checked, it’s not a crime to criticize candidates for the orifice of scumbag-in-chief in this country, nor is cynicism verboten. Maybe it would give some of the Pollyanna teachers a hard slap back to reality.
In short: gently caress what small-minded idiots may think about your family. They’re not worth the saliva you’d expend spitting in their faces.

ParticipantWhat about an west-east commute and a home in one of the beach cities? If you’re going to live in SD area, do it right ๐

Dow was at 10.4k last October. Funny, I still had clients. If anything, that which can’t be done in-house still has to be done by someone. A bad economy just means that in-house staff are let go, and contractors pick up the slack.
I’m not a “contract worker” in the sense of working for a middleman, BTW. I’m both the middleman and the worker ๐

ParticipantFreefall!!
Dow down 200pts+
Ride ’em down! Hope this trend continues – DOW 11.5k before a recovery to 13.5k would be niiiice to see.

ParticipantPoor baby. I own a condo that makes about a 5% cap if the owner is very lucky. Real question is as follows: how did the OP manage to get only a NYC or SF cap rate in Deeeee-TROIT?
spdrun
ParticipantYaddadee, bladdadee, dah. Many European cities are just as cold/snowy as MSP, yet people do manage to walk more than the average obese American in a warm climate.

ParticipantHow the hell did you get only a 5% cap rate in Deeee-TROIT?
What about using it to open/buy a small business? In a real city, not a festering outhouse, of course.
As far as buying property, it’s not only the original poster’s age bracket. I’m 33 and I’m looking diligently. If I play it smart, I can probably not worry about basic living costs/a full-time job for a good long time if I get some property leased up.
spdrun
ParticipantI’m not equal pay for equal jobs. I’m not one of those “change the ratio” lemmings, who think that the male/female ratio should be 50/50 in every field. Equal opportunity, NOT equal outcome.
