ParticipantLess than 0.1% of the county population with the majority being local hires? Not really.
Apple’s jumped the shark anyway — I suspect when the Macs go ARM, they’ll fully embrace the computing-as-a-prison model. No unsigned apps, maybe nothing from outside the App Store.
Not to mention that their hardware has generally become unrepairable, crippled junk. Great keyboards, right. Batteries that swell and break Macbook keyboards and touchpads. Cracking touchbars. The “one port wonder” base Macbook.

ParticipantWhat “SUV motorcade?”
AOC took a taxi that happened to be a minivan with two aides instead of walking to the subway after a parade. Oh, the horror!
People get their titties in a twist about the oddest things.
EDIT: It wasn’t even a taxi. Her aunt picked her up in her personal minivan.

ParticipantSays the cancer patient who could become unable to work and end up dependent on social insurance at basically any time… the only difference between us is our disabilities. Yours is physical, mine is Asperger’s or similar, which makes it unlikely for me to be able to hold down non-academic full-time work long-term.
We’re both creating our own “welfare” programs to deal with the future. You should be rejoicing that taxes on HFT people are going up — it will put more funds into Medicare and Medicaid if you’ll need it.
spdrun
ParticipantOh MY GOD. An 0.1% tax on trades that will mostly affect HFT types. Oh, the HORROR!

ParticipantYet, will people actually walk the walk and buy such a truck, or will they prefer to buy used? I think Mahindra tried to enter the US market with a basic truck and failed. Americans love their comforts and gadgetry.

ParticipantYeah. That’s great until you put a “clown camera” up and it happens to point at the neighbor’s window and send footage of their 14 year old daughter changing to Amazon’s servers. Your right to film ends at someone else’s private property. Don’t be surprised to see your cameras cut off with a fireaxe and thrown in the trash.
The conditions for installing a camera should be:
(1) Local recording only. Get a DVR or fuck off — no need to extend Amazon’s surveillance network.
(2) No pointing at neighbors’ homes or windows.Anyway, Amazon should be giving away the things for free, not charging people for the privilege of adding to their spying network.

ParticipantEven the big developers cut corners — witness the spate of lawsuits that usually show up a few years after a condo conversion. What makes you think that Zillow will be any better? You’ll have someone in an office trying to hire talent 1000 miles away. Without someone to watch over the circus, how do we know that even licensed people aren’t hiring sketchy subcontractors?
Small renovators generally hire licensed contractors because they can get local recommendations for good people to hire.
spdrun
ParticipantHopefully fail. Techbro VC scum shouldn’t be competing with mom and pop investors.
Here’s a way to harsh their game, BTW … figure out which homes are owned by Zillow. Anonymously report the work being done to code enforcement — chances are, with a 90-day flipping window, they’re hiring unlicensed subs and not pulling proper permits. Good luck to them handling code issues in a timely manner if they don’t have anyone local…

ParticipantI didn’t say “no punishment”, just not “excessive punishment” followed by options for rehabilitation. Are you proposing a US Foreign Legion?
spdrun
ParticipantIncarceration costs approximately $50,000 per year per person. You can send them to Harvard for that price, or at least pay for some vocational training, psych treatment, and rehab (if applicable).

ParticipantWhat difference does it make if you pay health insurance premiums or a slightly lower amount of tax on average for similar public coverage (since profit motive has been removed)? If anything, if most people were on the same public coverage, their choice of physicians would increase, since most doctors would have to accept the “default” coverage.
Someone else’s money? Plenty of money to be cut from bloated defense budgets, welfare to defense contractors, subsidies to rich countries that don’t need them (Israel, Saudi), and from the costs of running a predatory “justice” system that incarcerates almost 1% of adult residents of the US.

ParticipantWarren used to be a Republican — she’s pretty pragmatic. I don’t get the US allergy to socializing things that are expensive as private services, like healthcare.
