ParticipantNot defending him, but there’s a higher % of sociopaths among politicians than among human society at large, so this sort of thing likely isn’t uncommon. He just happened to be caught with his schlong hanging out, so to speak.

ParticipantThree bedroom condos in PB under $500k are rare, but not exactly unheard of. Schools — use some creativity, if local public schools aren’t great, there are always Catholic schools.

I don’t get all of the hatred leveled at the nicer urban/walkable and beach areas of San Diego on this site. Why can’t a livable city have nice beaches as well? — “city” and “beach resort” don’t need to be mutually exclusive, especially in a place like SD where the nice beaches aren’t an hour and a half out of town like in NY or Boston.
And imagine being able to take your kids for an evening bike ride, swim, or sail when you both get home from work and school. Instead of having them play video games and gradually turn into fat porkmuffins.
As far as price, people here routinely talk about dropping $500k to $1MM on housing inland, so what gives?

ParticipantThe-Shoveler: “downtown” SD is crap, I agree. If you want to live in a nice/walkable area you have your choice:
(1) North Park
(2) Uni Heights
(3) PB or OB
(4) South Park/Golden Hill
(5) Parts of coastal North County (read: Carlsbad, Encinitas, or even Oceanside).Downtown SD is the equivalent of parts of Midtown Manhattan or areas near Wall St. Great for business but deadski after hours.

Participant(1) Aren’t the places in Temecula with larger lots in bushfire country?
(2) What’s wrong with being non-rich (aka middle class) in SD? Sure you don’t get as much floor space, but for $3-400k you can still have a decent house or condo within 10-15 min of the beach, and 45 min of the mountains in the other direction. Perhaps even the same distance to Balboa Park.
(3) Temecula: suffer less. That sounds like a good slogan for a nursing home and not a town!spdrun
ParticipantParamount: there isn’t just one person running the show there.

ParticipantYou’re assuming that most of the people on the Fed board are of Democratic persuasion. Besides, there’s plenty of time between now and Nov of 2014.
spdrun
ParticipantIn the short term, sure, why not? We’ve already had several breaks in continuity. Besides, the Fedheads need to create another buying opp for their corrupt cronies.

Participant. IMO, other than for catastrophic reasons, I believe there are very few ethically justifiable reasons to walk on any financial obligation, including a home.
Walking itself isn’t unethical. Walking and attempting to keep the house is — you signed a deal, pay the bank or give the house back.

ParticipantDon’t know — my idea of a nice commute still is a morning walk to midtown through Central Park. Apart from one heat wave and a hot weekend on Memorial Day, summer has actually been absolutely gorgeous this year. Sitting with my windows open right now, no A/C, and it feels more like SoCal than NYC in August.
Or a few-mile bike ride up the coast road in CA. Either one wakes you right up.

I have no problem with well-run condos where the board isn’t composed of petty wannabe gestapomen. The condo I bought in SD falls into that good category, though I can’t say the same about the managing agent.
(One employee of the management co actually told me that I “should have bought it to live in it”, despite there being no rules against renting. I asked him whether he’d rather it have sat vacant in dilapidated condition.)

Participant(probably closer to Riverside or Ft. Greene park, since it’s more affordable at least right now. though there is still a section of NYC from 100th to 109th st where you can pick up something with low carrying charges and within spitting distance of CP for a reasonable price)

ParticipantSo you’re spending an hour and a half of your life per day in an expensively-appointed German prison. That’s about 6.5% of your waking hours.
