ParticipantThat would seem like a douchey thing to do on the kids’ part, assuming the home town and place where they live are far apart and visiting isn’t easy.

ParticipantIf the default is set, then it applies across all devices/browsers/apps.
spdrun
ParticipantNot really — it’s trivial to set default to “friends only” and the privacy setting on each post is clearly visible and takes two clicks to set. User interface is not the problem here.

ParticipantWith your cynicism, wouldn’t you be better off living in the north woods of Maine, upper Michigan, or even the Upper West Side than in sunny Pollyanna California?

ParticipantAFAIK, the model X will *not* be $40k. There will be a third model called model E for that price.
Models S, E, and X, geddit?

ParticipantWrong, Drywall Pros (his firm) had a license till 2010 – he just added “Inc” after 2000 so the name changed…

ParticipantActually, looks like a decent craftsman. Sort of sad, with a smart wife or child to support him emotionally and balance the books, instead of pushing him away, he could be quite successful.
(Though is that a gap in the weld of the stadium seat umbrella holder?)

ParticipantIf he and some friends were at a bar chatting and I snooped unseen it feels that would be wrong even if they were speaking loudly enough for the public to hear
Public posts on FB are more like a letter to the editor of the local fishwrap. Plenty of people deliberately post stuff on FB with no privacy settings.

ParticipantNot unethical. If he doesn’t want the world reading it, and wants only “friends” to see it, he should limit the audience. There may be more personal posts that are in fact limited.

ParticipantDo any local laws govern rent raises in addition to CA law?
If you find a unit nearby for a better price, then by all means move. You probably don’t want to be renting from slightly-sleazy dirtbags anyway.
And lastly, just because the manager says it’s true, doesn’t mean it is.

ParticipantSadly, lawyers qualify as part of the intelligentsia, so they’d probably be first to be sent to a camp or shot if it came to dictatorship. OTOH, enginerds are too valuable to a war/surveillance machine to not be used — they may end up working in a “sharashka.”

My advice: it hasn’t happened in the US for 200+ years, and it’s unlikely to happen. If it does, have enough capital to get out of Dodge. If you end up waiting tables in a cafe in a foreign city, it’s still better than death or imprisonment.

ParticipantAs far as point (1), he at least used to have employees, so he knows to hire others to do the heavy lifting.

ParticipantPatentable work isn’t the be-all and end-all of engineering, though. There are likely to be more new discoveries in chemical and EE than in (say) civil or mechanical, which often involves more project design and integration than new technology.

ParticipantIt’s also a philosophy of deep (stupid?) pessimism. Let’s throw everything out, house, spouse, and all, because things will never turn around and get better.
Instead of renting out some rooms, going minimalist, and holding out for better times.
