ParticipantShe needs house arrest and psychiatric treatment, as well as to pay restitution. Both cheaper and more constructive than locking her in prison for a decade.

ParticipantThen CA would be forced into a systematic overhaul — it’s broke because of an overgrown, overpaid bureaucracy, not because it needs support from insider trading. Don’t get me wrong: I support things like CA’s strict pollution regulations, but most states could be run in a more efficient manner no doubt.

ParticipantWow. What a shithole day to cap off a shithole week…
Not that it was really a surprise….
Next week should be fun… Volatility that is…..
Why complain? You griped when asset prices bubbled up, shouldn’t you be rootin’ for a leg down?

ParticipantSeveral voting Board of Governors members have gone on record stating that a drop in the market is NOT a good reason to delay tapering or increase it. 30% down from peak in NASDAQ will take us back to approximately this month a year ago; no big deal. I suspect that Fed Board members are all too aware that the indices are overvalued and are trying to prick the bubble before it grows larger with more of a potential for harm.

ParticipantNASDAQ -113. TWTR down to 41 from ~70 at peak. Beware the social media bubble…

ParticipantShooting, off road motorcycles, large barking dogs, 4×4 monster trucks, weird animals that were never meant to be pets, you name it.
Apart from the irresponsible shooting, the other things sort of sound like fun. Next bike will probably be a KLR-650 painted flat black with ammo cases bolted to the panniers.
Or a Kondor (Swiss military surplus bike with Ducati thumper motor) if I can source an example in good shape.
Only question is, do I get the “POOR IMPULSE CONTROL” tattoo on my forehead or not?

ParticipantAccountability? How about this? If you shoot without proper precautions even on your own property and someone gets killed, you’re liable for murder, both in civil court ($$$ lawsuits) and criminally (20 years in prison)?

The OP doesn’t NEED to sell. Why not just list it in the newspaper, on Craigslist, and put a “FSBO, Brokers Not Protected (619)555-3453” sign outside?
If he manages to sell, he’ll still owe the usual transaction costs, but not a 5-6% broker fee. Remember that the logistics of the closing are done by an escrow/title firm in CA, not by a broker, and an escrow/title firm will still be involved (but for a much lower price).

ParticipantIMO, and this is not advice, I don’t think you can go wrong holding onto investment property in San Diego. That said, given the volatility of the current economic climate, this would hold as long as you know you can afford to do so, even if there is another downturn in the real estate market, and, if you know you will not need the cash for any other of life’s many surprises.
If this holds true for the house, it will also hold true for something returning closer to 6%. So selling and buying other things in CA may not be a bad idea.

ParticipantAssuming $4000/yr property tax, if you can rent it for $3000/mo, that’s only a 4.5% cap rate. Before management costs and insurance.
I’d consider selling and buying other rental property at 6-7% cap, which is doable these days. Maybe condos where the HOA takes care of a lot of the lifting and a management firm is less necessary.

ParticipantRiverside County is also moving in the direction of pit bull (and similar breed) eradication.
“Pit bulls and pit bull mixes in unincorporated Riverside County must be spayed or neutered under terms of a sterilization ordinance the Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday, Oct. 8.”
I fully understand the mechanics/demographics of the victim mentality surrounding pit bulls and similar breeds.
Bringing a pit bull(s) into a community full of small children is about as moronic as it comes.
Sounds like the idiots on the Riverside Co board of supervisors need to be sterilized. Not allowing stupids like them to reproduce would improve the gene pool in CA 🙂
Bringing ANY ill-trained powerful or large dog, REGARDLESS OF BREED into a community with small children is as moronic as it comes. I’m fine with strict liability legislation for damages caused by dogs. Breed-specific legislation is idiotic.

Participant
As an airline pilot, I’m extremely familiar with everything you’ve mentioned, but I’d still like to see a tracking system that could not be deactivated in flight, so, regardless of the scenario, we could get the last known position of the aircraft.
It would have to not use GPS since GPS reception is easy to jam with jammers being easily available. Perhaps a combination of GPS data being sent to a satellite uplink (using a transponder with internal batteries charged independently of the aircraft electrics) and a simple radio signal that can be triangulated if GPS is jammed would work.

ParticipantHighly doubt that the Fed will use a NASDAQ dump as an excuse to continue QE longer than a 10 billion per meeting schedule allows, absent other factors. The NASDAQ is in bubble territory, and I suspect that they’re seeking to deliberately deflate this bubble since a fall from 4300 is a lot less painful than a fall from 7500.
Remember that a 25% leg down on the NASDAQ from peak will only put us back to last April (3200 or so). Also, the Fed voting members are (thankfully) more conservative in 2014 than they were in 2013, so Yellen’s supposed craziness is balanced by other voting members.
