ParticipantWho said SD? I said CA.
Coastal CA is generally NIMBY-laden. Good luck without any gov’t support.

ParticipantGood luck getting any infrastructure built in a densely-populated area like SD without gov’t involvement.

ParticipantIf they required $100k to be liquid at time of signing, could you have put the $100k back into stock after the loan was closed? Or did they require you to keep it in some sort of escrow account with them?
Seems like an odd requirement.

ParticipantDamn right it would be. Better than the oil and gas companies being allowed to rape the world’s environment non-stop. We require fire exits, smoke detectors, safe electrical systems, design for quake safety, etc. What would be wrong with requiring a system that safeguards grid capacity as well as safeguarding the environment in multiple ways?

ParticipantWhile your at it why don’t we just nationalize everything?
Absolutely, most public utilities should be public. Health insurance? Yep! Rail network, where the land was given to railroads who neglect it? Sure. Need I go on?

ParticipantInteresting question: if you’re on grid, but have a totally isolated solar/battery system, will you still need to pay the power company parasites an extra surcharge?
Solution, BTW, is to have a state takeover of the private power companies without compensation. Just let then bankrupt, expropriate them, and be done with it.

ParticipantBuy one off Craigslist for $100 — people buy and sell them all the time. Get a window unit. Remove it if the HOA complains about it.

ParticipantHaha, I don’t sleep on the fire escape! And no neighbors with large luggage either (yet).
Good movie though.

ParticipantIsn’t 80c a bit warm? 😀
If you’re so fearful of opening the windows (I basically live /w open windows 6 months out of the year in a NYC apartment that’s closer to other homes than your house), perhaps adding an economizer to the existing system that draws in cooler outside air might be an option.
Or window fans — they’re loud enough to block any sound coming out and non 100% transparent. A ceiling fan is also nice since it mixed cool and hot air from top to bottom.

ParticipantCO2 is really the only pollutant that matters long-term. Everything else disperses or disintegrates fairly quickly.
It also costs a lot of energy and pollution to produce a new car.

ParticipantI am into speaking my conscience not playing G-d. Great song though.
If I were G-d, the punishment of the putzes involved in this stupidity would involve much less pleasant things than simply losing a case. Using an ill teenager in that way deserves some divine retribution.
Jury nullification is just human justice, not playing G-d. You can speak your conscience to the court, but no one will actually give a fuck, nor will it make a difference in the outcome. Getting on the jury at all costs might be a different story.

ParticipantIf I wanted a “full sized boat”, I’d get a job driving for UPS. I’d sooner drive a Miata or MR-2 than an SUV — at least it can get out of the way and avoid a crash.
And wow, the next Miata is slated to be 2,250 lb!

ParticipantThere are a lot of people on this coast who seem to keep cars in the family for 10-20 years. Kind of like houses in San Diego according to bearishgurl…
Buy Volvo 940 in 1996, pay off loan, drive for 15 years, give to college student son, son gets job, give to younger daughter, etc, by which time it has covered 250,000 miles.

ParticipantAgreed that the shootdown was despicable. Whether act of war or a terrorist act, and how to respond to it is ultimately between the Malaysian government, the Dutch, the Ukrainians, and the Russians. Not really our fight here or for us to decide.
