ParticipantElectric is pretty much a fixed cost. Would be really hard to go above $50/mo for a condo. Cable: I just offer Internet and an over-air HDTV antenna. Fixed monthly cost.

ParticipantMight improve China in the long run if it does happen over there.

ParticipantUh. That’s not just a no…That’s a hell no….
That’s the way it’s often done on the East Coast. One water and gas meter for all apartments in a building, so heat and water are paid by the landlord. Electricity bill is small enough to make either arrangement (landlord pays or tenant pays) acceptable.

ParticipantWhether any of this turns into a calamitous economic meltdown obviously depends on the rest of the response.
And by “calamitous meltdown” you mean “blessed opportunity.” Lol.
And not that the Chinese economy being sucker-punched would be a bad thing — I’m all for China being set back a decade.

ParticipantIs there any good reason to put utilities into their name vs keeping them in your name and billing them?

ParticipantFlyerInHI – I don’t have any such restrictions. It likely depends on the HOA. Pick one that’s as loose as possible, and either become board president, or make sure the president is mildly afraid of you.

ParticipantWhy the purple dancing fork would you want to waste time mowing and painting when there are better things to do with your life? A house is nothing but a noose around the owner’s neck unless it’s bringing income. I understand having a veggie and flower garden, perhaps on a patio, but mowing a lawn is just dull.
BTW – it’s only inferior in an area where kids can’t walk to school, to the park, etc by themselves. Where I grew up, kids do it all the time and no one gives them a second glance.
As far as annoying the neighbors, you ultimately have to be willing to tell the neighbors to shut up and piss off.

ParticipantI didn’t think she was Brian’s type 😉

ParticipantMaybe YOU shouldn’t be in that building if you can’t handle kids. If you qualified it as “ill-bred rugrats”, I’d be OK with it, but if you’re not willing to share an apartment building with families, YOU’RE part of the problem.
I live in an apartment building with quite a few families with kids in it, and it’s not a problem. In fact, I’m glad it’s not all young partiers and geriatrics.

ParticipantOK, I get it about the loud music (nothing new, remember boom-boxes in the 80s?) and rowdiness. But nothing wrong with drinking or smoking a joint outside.
As far as kids, they should be in bed by 10-11, but the assertion that they should live on the bottom floor is frankly retarded. That would mean that in a ten-story building, only 10% of the apartments would be available to families.
Parents should be considerate and control their kids. I live below a couple with two kids and don’t have the same issues. The operative word is “lowlifes” not “kids.”
Lastly, you could always fight fire with fire. Get a giant woofer, attach it to the ceiling, play a particularly violent action movie through a 500W amplifier. Go for a walk at 6 am.
Wakey-wakey! 🙂

ParticipantFlyerInHI – disagree that living in an apartment is pathetic. It makes things easier, especially if you’re a single parent. Taking care of a house takes time, and we only have a certain number of hours in a day.
Are the kids acting out at night? Now you’re saying “all day”. Kids are out of school. They should be playing. If this is in Vegas, it’s probably too hot for them to play outside. Unfortunately, Vegas is a hot, dusty pesthole in summer. I don’t see a big problem with noise during daytime hours.
If the place is very dirty/unsanitary, you might help the dad get custody via an anonymous call to CPS 😉

Participant^^^^
flu, I agree. I assumed that he’d already talked to the neighbors.
spdrun
ParticipantCondo? Complain to the HOA president or managing agent.
Or call the cops. Not sure if the cops can do much if the noise doesn’t extend outside the building (they can’t in NYC), but they can knock on doors and generally annoy the annoying neighbors.

ParticipantUltimately, they do have to use US equipment to reach US customers. Is there any way for the US to deny such companies access to the US phone network?
