ParticipantThere is already legislation. Problem is that it’s unevenly applied, if at all. Assault, criminal mayhem, complicity in a crime.
DA’s need to apply the law.

ParticipantBut based on all the squirming and fighting back she was doing on the ground it’s clear she’s not cooperating. Surest way to get your ass beat by the cops is to fight back when they are trying to arrest you.
It’s a natural human instinct to squirm and fight when some piece of shit thug is punching you in the face. Do not try to excuse this shithead’s actions. Hope the city loses big, he gets fired, and he gets charged in a Federal civil rights (doesn’t have to involve race as law is written) rap as well.
Bet he beats his wife and daughter, too.

Participant#time to demilitarize our police
Or militarize them and subject them to something similar to the UCMJ, where offenses are treated more severely. If they give a few germs like the one on the video ten years’ hard labor for doing something like that, then maybe the rest would be more circumspect.

Participant^^^
Blaming the victim much? If that roid-addled asshat can’t handle a slightly irritating question (as all public-facing employees get), he should be breaking rocks in prison for a while.
I refuse to show special deference to cops, and talk to them exactly like to your average shop employee. Polite, but not obsequious — no “sir” or “ma’am.” I’m not a serf and cops are not nobles, last I checked. Serfdom for my people ended in 1861 or so (Russian empire) 🙂

ParticipantIs there a statute of limitations on a Federal rap of civil rights violation under color of law?

ParticipantIn the future, I would give them a formal, written statement first. Ideally notarized. Then they can’t play games like this without it looking questionable.
Were the cops incompetent, or were they protecting someone whom they knew?

ParticipantBlogstar — could you have asked to make a written statement and have it attached to the report?

ParticipantThe asshole who did this deserves to be rear-ended in an old Crown Vic. Harsh? Maybe. But fuck that cowardly piece of shit. Bet he beats his wife or girlfriend as well.
As far as staying out of Carlsbad, I’m sure every department has a few fuckups like that cop. Maybe if gross brutality was an offense punishable by a firing squad on the nearest courthouse lawn, psychos like him would think twice.

ParticipantOfficers? More like truffle-sniffers. Oink. Oink. Wheeeeeeeeeee!

ParticipantIf our economy is based on people spending like sheep, then screw our economy. It deserves to fail.

ParticipantThat’s why there are checkpoints north of SD.
Nah, I’ve been pulled over in a car with US registration at one of the checkpoints. Their purpose is to harass people and sniff for truffles so to speak.
They even went as far to question a friend who had an accent one time.

ParticipantComparing San Diego to NYC or Boston, I’ve seen more first-generation immigrants working in hotels and restaurants in either of those two Northeastern cities than in San Diego.

ParticipantBlah-blah-blah. Stupid laws and borders meant to keep the rich rich and the poor poor SHOULD be lied and cheated around. Ideally, anyone would be able to live anywhere in the world without too much red tape. I wonder if, in the 80s, you thought that people who escaped from East Germany should be repatriated by force. After all, they broke the law, right?
I can’t say this as strongly as: fuck the law. Fuck the people who made the laws. Just because it’s a law doesn’t mean there’s honor in respecting it. The people are in the country. Most of them have worked productively and kept their noses free of crime. It’s a done deal — time to legalize them. Future border and immigration policy should be a matter for debate, of course.
Also, most service worker immigrants are fairly young. Why not give them a shot at permanent residence? Chances are, if they’re legal, they’ll start out low, but some of them will get an education and move on to higher-paying jobs. More money into the social security system. What we’ll pay them after age 65-70 will be a comparative pittance.
