ParticipantI doubt City Heights is 15 miles away. If you think about it, L.A. and S.D. are full of desirable pockets located just a few miles away from not-so-desirable hoods.
It seems excessive, but good-condition 2 bedroom Craftsmans go for 700-800 in North Park and Normal Heights. Not that this place is great curb appeal.

Participant
”but there are plenty of examples of large drops that have already occurred.”
I agree. Here is one on the same street as you mentioned. The house isn’t fancy but all in all I think the buyer got a decent deal.

It sold well under ’04 pricing. Can you find a deal like that now? Probably not. Maybe this fall …
Yikes. It takes all kinds, I guess.

Participant

Even if Teachers total compensation is included, I think we all know where the money is going…
Honestly though, I don’t want to fight this battle, and I do think teachers deserve a good salary and benefits.

California is at 124.8% of average for teacher salaries.
http://www.aft.org/salary/2007/download/AFT2007SalarySurvey.pdfCalifornia cost of living is 136.6% of average.
California cost of housing is at about 200% of average.
http://www.top50states.com/cost-of-living-by-state.htmlThis would suggest to me that they make comparatively less than most teachers nationally.
Would you disagree?
Without checking out the links — so teachers get socked with the sun tax, like so many of us do. Shocker.
I listen to those crazy loons John & Ken on KFI and they claim teachers in CA make more than other teachers nationwide, even factoring in cost of living. Don’t know their source.
