ParticipantI have never bought anything on CL but used it occasionally to sell random “garage sale” type items. As a seller the problems I see are:
1. 90% of buyers are flaky/not serious. They’ll send me one email saying they are “very interested” then when I reply I never hear from them again. Pretty annoying.
2. Of the remaining 10% of buyers most seem to either want your goods dirt cheap (much less than fair value) and/or will pull a bait and switch by lowballing when I meet up to sell the item.
Personally when I sell items I always list them slightly higher than what I actually intend to get, to account for the fact that everyone tries to negotiate. So maybe that is factoring into the high prices that you see.

ParticipantYup it specifically says:
“Note that every driver has the option not to
participate.”If I ever get pulled over in one of these things I’ll definitely be exercising that option.

ParticipantI’ve actually heard of those before (never actually seen one) in either LA or SD where the police would set up a roadside smog check and randomly pull over cars that appeared to be “illegally modified”. Then they would pop your hood and do a smog check on your car to verify that everything was legit.
That was probably close to 5 years ago when SD had a major street racing scene. Now that the scene is dead I haven’t heard of that happening anymore. Would be interesting to know if they are starting to do that again.
Did the other cars in line appear to be modified or stock?
