We were in the Poway Unified school district in 2007-2008(Westwood Elementary) and had a terrible time with the special ed services. My child has high functioning autism and after going through the qualification process, they still denied him any services.
When we moved to Texas and started the process over, the new school was shocked that my son didn’t qualify for services – he cleary has autism. I’m guessing that it’s a budget issue???
I really don’t know anything about Carmel Valley’s schools in regard to special ed services. I highly encourage you to arm yourself with special education laws and procedures when working with whatever school your son ends up going to. You might also want to do a search for special education advocacy groups in San Diego to give you more insight into what schools might be better suited for your child.

We are currently living in the Hampton Roads area and have been pleased with the schools, beaches, and recreational opportunitites. A nice home – 4 bedroom 2200 sq ft can be found in the 300-350’s. Both the towns of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake have well respected school districts. The only downside to the area is the heavy military and tourism that for some pulls down salaries.

seattle-reloParticipantI haven’t posted on here in a long time, but saw Weberlin’s questions about Virginia and thought I’d chime in. I’m currently in Virginia Beach – the southeast corner of Virginia. In terms of buying, the market is still coming down…this area is a little behind the West Coast in price declines – so you may want to be a bit more cautious about buying right away. Plus there are a lot of great areas and not so great areas – you might want to give yourself time to find the best fit for you.
Portsmouth/ Newport News is in my area (Hampton Roads- Tidewater) – still about 3 hours away – so not an option. And honestly I wouldn’t live there anyway – pretty seedy areas with awful schools.
Quantico is a very pretty area – green, with rolling hills – in general that area of Virginia is quite nice with the Blue Ridge Mountains an hour away – including the Shenandoah National Park. The traffic is rough and the climate is much different from San Diego – especially the humidity in the summers. It’s about 4 hours to the Outer Banks of North Carolina – a great area to getaway and enjoy the beach.
My husband has an office in that area – if you’d like I can ask him what towns people prefer to live in.
Good Luck and welcome to Virginia!
