SDownerParticipant
JG,
Privatization and profit based models are very efficient for many fields, but healthcare is a very different beast to control in this way. You may be singing a very different song if you were in different circumstances.
Do not apply blanket policies, which is what the insurance companies do in order to refuse some very basic and necessary stuff.
When you go to the best/top rated doctors (based on experience in field), the first question they ask you is HMO or PPO?? The insurances create so much trouble for these doctors when it comes to paying for some tests and visits, that many docs would think 10 times before ordering a test.
This is good in cost reduction, but it also strips a professional of decision making capacity. If the doc does the test, the insurance will bite them. If they dont do the test, the patient might come back with a tort law suit. Guess who is left holding the bag? The patient, who doesnt have the necessary education to analyse his situation. Is it any wonder that healthcare is in shambles?

SDownerParticipantIt is not always the doctors and medical professional. I would say it is more due to the tort culture, which targets this group easily.
Sometimes you can see them struggling to say the right words to a patient, when all that patient needs are some hard, harsh words of direction in their life.

SDownerParticipantJG,
How about watching some documentaries on History channel or better still some good books on History and current affairs. Might expand ur thinking. Everyone respects the brave souls who walk the streets of Iraq. out of respect for human life and sacrifice for a cause, comes the resentment over Iraq.SDownerParticipantJG,

Have you ever been on the phone with an insurance company/doctor’s office/medical lab after they have denied some life-saving medical tests on a technicality, which was their mistake in the first place?

SDownerParticipant“SDowner, think of it in broader terms. We are all one human race. Some people have it hard, some other have everything handed to them on a silver plater. Don’t you think that the hardship of toiling for years as illegals is enough paying of the dues?”
Yes, I agree with you on that. I am trying to look at it in a broader sense. I am against Iraq invasion. (Dont want to hijack this thread into any other path)
I am a first-generation immigrant. Nothing has been handed to me on a silver plater. I can understand the need to fix this problem of illegal immigration, their exploitation by employers, the political motives behind the 2 parties trying to take advantage of the situation for their gain just before election time. I do not have a very good grasp of things, yet. Still learning.
One thing was clear. This bill would have been a “quick fix”, leading to demoralization of lot of folks who are waiting in line for GC. Yes, I am biased, but I have been thro the process and I personally know lot of people inside and outside the country waiting for GC. We hold it in very high regard, american citizenship. I dont understand why America would treat it so flippantly.

SDownerParticipantComparing foreign policy to domestic immigration policy is faulty at best.
Reforms need to be realistic and systematic in implementation. The bill that failed to pass has some major flaws. It was political grandstand at its best.

SDownerParticipantI waited patiently, jumped thro all the hoops, did things the right way and got my GC after 6 years.
I am educated, pay my taxes, contribute to this society, do not hide my income, etc. (Maybe I should)
Why should people be rewarded for just their proximity to the US and illegal access across the border? Having oceans to cross has just made immigration control easier with other countries.
There definitely is a human face to the immigration problem, it is multifaceted, and very difficult to start addressing, but this piece of legislation does not even begin to address the problem at its grass roots.
