ParticipantZeitgeist, in my opinion your statement could not be anymore biased and hypocritical. You fear the rights of Americans are being quickly eroded in the name of emergency under Obama when we had habeas corpus suspended after 9/11 under Bush? How about a little unwarranted NSA domestic wiretapping for you? Give me a break? Power grabs? Where was your outrage and fear when real rights were being eroded?
Bush has freed an entire generation of women? Iraq is still an unfinished book and none of us have any idea how that country is going to play out in the next 10 to 15 years. I tell you what though you couldn’t pay a million f-ing dollars to live there for a year. I beg you to send your mother, a sister or close female friend over there and come back and let us all know how great and free they felt. You have no idea what you are talking about.

ParticipantDid anybody catch Cramer talking about Bear Stearns and how he had spoken to to the top guys and how they were his friends and that they essentially promised him that all would be well. Cramer many times said over and over how close he was to these people; I think with one guy from BS he said he knew him for 20 years.
That’s part of the problem; how could Cramer effectively give objective advice to the general public when he can be used as a mouth piece by high level CEO’s of some these investment firms. When he went on and on about how he too was duped by those guys I lost all respect and could care less for the rest of my life what come out of that man’s mouth.
In regards to Obama’s performance in his first 55 or so odd days; I think he hasn’t even done enough to say. For God’s sake the man hasn’t even been in office for 2 months. Within his first week the conservative punditry were already complaining about his performance. So, for those that hate him it will never be enough. There is no way you can make it reasonable to them.
I do appreciate a president who will not obstruct stem cell research and will not have pastor Ted Haggard on a weekly conference call in the Oval office.
When Bush came into office I supported him for four years. It wasn’t until the fourth year with the tipping point being Katrina, that my rose colored glasses cracked and the glass shattered in my eyes.
Rush Limbaugh may want Obama to fail, but I sincerely hope Obama succeeds, because I can’t handle 11 years of failure. I say 11 because I don’t think Bush was all that bad in his first year.
I can’t easily forget Bush talking to crowd in New Mexico boasting about the surge in home ownership under his presidency and how more and more people were feeling the pride in having their “American Dream” realized…does anyone else remember this? Yet, as proud as he was he and his crew; especially his financial gurus never once said “hmm…maybe we should take a look into this huge surge in ownership and how suddenly all these people who previously couldn’t qualify for one now can”?
I haven’t quickly forgotten the last few years and I don’t think most of us have either.

ParticipantOne thing I noticed Ayn Rand having a respect for is the Industrialist; John Rockefeller, JP Morgan, Henry Ford etc. It seems the downfall to a business occurs when it leaves the hands of the pull yourself up by your bootstraps owner/creator and into the impersonal hands of greedy CEO’s who are more plugged into the DC circle than the actual hands on operations of the company.
Its not the business owner most of us despise, it’s the corporate guy who breezes into a business, looting as much as he can get and going on with his life elsewhere richer and fatter. Many of these CEO’s have no personal stake other than loss of reputation to make them want to create the best product, but who cares if your unpopular when you have your own island in the South Pacific. Their mentality often seems to me “I better get as much as I can before I get booted outta here”.
-Concho, thank you for your input regarding the Chicago Boys, I’ll have a lot of fun researching it and discovering how it all went wrong.
-Surflust, I agree with your post completely how its a bit unfair to demonize capitalism/free market when we haven’t really seen it happen in the US; though it seems the lending/mortgage industries had a laissez faire existence for awhile and we saw how it ended up. I also agree that in order to have a free market society one must have integrity if only for the sake of doing good business to make more profit.
Butleroftwo, I don’t have too many words. I’m actually happy that Obama put the smack down on Pelosi and told her to take out the Family Panning Pork. Also, I don’t remember Obama apologizing to Arabs, but I do remember him saying something to the extent that we will not apologize for the way we live as Americans, but hey, I admit I’m a supporter so I’m definitely one sided.
-kismetdad, thank you for referencing that article I can’t wait to read it and enjoyed the trivia you threw in there about the level of influence “Atlas Shrugged” has played in lives.
-davelj, I agree luck can play a fortunate role in our lives, but we can’t depend on it. Traditional Chinese culture understands the importance of luck and that it why it is so mystically desired in babies, newlyweds and pretty much every aspect of life. I think Ayn Rand would see luck as a form of mysticism and therefore she would reject it and tell people to plod on regardless of good or bad luck.
-jf, your sounding a little liberal in your wanting to recognize the sadness of the human plight because of dumb people…lol. Nice to see you again.

ParticipantHere here svelte, I couldn’t agree more. I am also a registered Independent who has leaned Democratic since religion, personal and private information have become campaign topics. I remember when Tipper Gore tried pulling some of the stuff that religious nuts do and I didn’t like it then either.
I do get tired of hearing the current talking points about what Socialist Dems are when the bailout was bipartisan and McCain is talking about the government buying up all the bad mortgages; that made me sick to my stomach when I heard it during the debate.
