ParticipantPeace! BG has not encouraged me to live in Chula Vista – she actually said at least once that the commute is too much when you have kids and life is short. She is just trying to say that by disregarding some schools based on some internet stats one can miss some opportunities. I agree, to a certain degree. IF I really get interested in CV, I would scope out the schools in person of course. I supposed the ones with mixed race could be influenced to check Hispanic, true, I haven’t thought about it. But still that doesn’t change signifcantly the percentage of white.
Now, I don’t think anything bad about the Hispanics in the schools there (those with good scores). I am sure many if not most, come from quite decent families, with decent education and income, so that’s not a problem. The APIs are mostly very good, so the teachers must be also pretty good.
My concern would be the same if a school has 75-80% Asians or African-Americans etc. and only 5-10% white. I’d prefer not be in such a SMALL minority – IF I have a choice or unless it;s counterbalanced by some other large advantage – e.g. short commute, family there. The advantges could be lower prices, bigger and newer places, etc. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if we were in either. It’s just you know, how well you fit in, and similarity in culture and such. Right now, San Marcos – similar commute, but closer to biotech companies – potential job location – seems like a better match – on paper, at first glance. (Haven’t been there yet as a buyer, so I wouldn’t know for sure.)

ParticipantMy coworker from Otay Ranch claims 30-35′ at non-rush and 45-60′ at rush hour. I believe he’s taking the toll road though.
Most of the schools in Chula Vista have indeed good scores, especially east of 805. When I looked at demographics in schools though, I was surprised to see that the whites is actually a very small minority, and in quite a few Hispanics are like 80% or more. Obviously I knew there were a lot of Hispanics (and I have absolutely nothing against them) but I did not think that the whites are in such a minority in schools there, like 10%. Only in Otay Ranch there were more whites, and asians. I worry it may not be a good fit for us. I like diversity and all and I don’t expect for the whites to be a majority, but less than 25% whites concerns me a little, epsecially when one race/ethnicity constitutes more than 75% and it’s not a diverse racial mix.

ParticipantThanks KIBU, I heard from my co-workers that actually 52 rush hour traffic got worse since they opened that extension.
Changing commute to non-rush hour is doable, but even so we are talking 45′ door to door for me and maybe 40′ for my husband (from Otay Ranch). On the other hand, PQ/Sabre Springs commute got worse according to my co-workers.
I disagree about San Marcos schools. The high school has improved substantially – API the same as the Carlsbad ones. I don’t remember the other schools. Commute – like Chula Vista more or less (+/- 5′ at non-rush)
Clairemont – let’s say you manage to choice the kid into UC schools – which is still a hassle and UC schools are not exceptionally great, except perhaps Curie. Still for the age of the houses and the school quality I think it’s still too expensive.
Mira Mesa is of course, still on the table due to the shorter commute and lower prices. Still, we did not like the general area, beside the Calle Cristobal one – that is pretty limiting to a small area. We will revisit it though, for sure.
I know, very hard decision! Maybe the prices will go down more by the time we have to buy….
