ParticipantOh, they expect when you enter the kindergarden to know the alphabet and to count. That’s what preschool is about.

ParticipantWell, my daughter and her friends at other schools have plenty of homework as 1st graders. Not that much in K, true. She is in school from 8:15 to 3 pm, then afterhours till 6. Has been like that in K , too.
Scarlett
ParticipantI am not sure where you find out those things but from what we know from public and private schools those things are so not true. They might have been true in Preschool. The kids don’t get to take naps starting with Kindergarden – either public or private. And no, breakfast is NOT served by school. And no, the caretakers don’t care about your child. So they are very tired and cranky when you pick them up and you still have to struggle with homework and dinner. Again they *could* do homework in afterhours, but it’s not enforced and that young of a age they don’t have the better judgement to do homework then instead of play

ParticipantWhat segments of the sellers “demographic” have changed so dramatically? I mean, comparing to a more normal housing market. I am curious why is the inventory bottom low. It seems to me the prices have recovered quite a bit from the “bottom”, we’ve worked our way through most of the short sales and foreclosures – I think. Are that many more people still underwater? Are the banks holding on to the foreclosures “tsunami”?
Is the low inventory not as bad compared to normal market because even though at any given point not many houses are on the market, they go in escrow within days, compared to weeks in a more normal market?

ParticipantHello SDR, How about the North County area – Carlsbad, San Marcos, Encinitas? Is that market so crazy as well? Now that I have a job in Carlsbad we’re thinking of getting a house up there in the general area. I like those neighborhoods. Our limit is 600K and a cursory look on sdlookup yielded less than a dozen listings total (4 bdr SFH). But if it’s that crazy and have to offer above the LP and compete with cash offers…we’d rather rent some more than deal with that.
Thanks!

ParticipantI fell in love with that area (Soderblom) too. Yes, the trees have their charm. Not sure if many of the houses there are that big though.

ParticipantI got my ticket dismissed because of some “admin” reasons I suppose. I’ve use ticketkick.

ParticipantHas anybody donated directly to a shelter or a organization for disabled kids or suffering from some condition, or for victims of child abuse, homeless, etc.?
Scarlett
ParticipantThank you! Those are very useful suggestions.
We’ll definitely check out Alliance for Africa. As for other kids, it seems all our friends/coworkers have had kids already…It’s good to know Salvation army has a small overhead.Flu, we had similar experience with you in the craigslist.:). That site for stuffed animals – we could mail them or drop them on of our Orange County trips.

ParticipantIt might be actually 7:30-7:40.It varies a lot. MBMA starts at 8:20-8:30. I think 8:15-8:30 is more common…Torrey Pines elem. starts at 9 am. Really the start hour was a factor when considering to either rent or buy in Torrey Pines attendance area, more than any API score… I think 2 of the Scripps Ranch public elem start also at 9 am. Ashley Falls in CV starts at 8 am. You have to find out for your particular area. And it still might change from year to year, so no absolute guarantees…

Participant
If you go private school, you can live somewhere less xpensive.
In principle, true… but if you want to live close to school… aren’t the good private schools in relatively expensive areas? Just asking, I haven’t really considered private schools – since the ones close to where I live are in the 20k+ range tuition (Francis Parker, La Jolla Country Day) – totally out of question for me. MBMA is 10k+, about the same as the preschool…Scarlett
ParticipantThank you and the same to you, Flu! Wishing you the best outcome and results with your desmoids, good health in general. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

ParticipantAt the last moment, I got a new job and we’ve decided to continue with a Montessori school (my daughter went to a Montessori preschool) for a little while, we thought it best for her personality, even though it’s expensive. So she is going to the Mission Bay Montessori Academy – in University City, at least for K. I’ve heard good things about Doyle though. What I didn’t like was the 7:30 am start!!!

ParticipantI have lived in the area for 10 yrs, albeit East of 5, renting and I’ve looked periodically to buy or rent in some of those complexes so my daughter would go to Torrey Pines Elementary too. But in the end, I thought they were too expensive for the quality of the condos. So we are still renting in the area, but East of 5 (that goes to Doyle Elementary). Do you live in the area too?
Yes, student rentals there are a big problem.
My favorites would be Cape La Jolla and SouthPointe, but Cape La Jolla (Gardens) is too expensive but newer and better shape; LJ Shores Heights is even more expensive. In general many of those complexes are quite old (70s) and probably less than half owner-occupied (Southpointe is about half). Personally didn’t like the Eastbluff. Woodlands West is ok. Others that you mentioned are too small, IMO. I am picky about floorplans. But depends what you can live with and how much you want to spend, and if being in La Jolla/UTC area is important for reasons other than school (e.g. commute).
