ParticipantSome men are much better at getting laid than others. They tend to be very confident, funny and non-needy with women. Women tend to have sex with men they are attracted to, not necessarily those who make the best partners.
Just tell your daughters to date awkward needy guys, and it’s unlikelely those guys are getting laid anywhere else!

ParticipantI suspect that the truth about prostitution like the truth about frug use may be clouded in hysteria, and unspoken moral judgments.

Participantdivorce lawyers i know are a particularly damaged lot. tend to have higher substance abuse issues. they deal with a lot of horrifying insanity and ugliness,a nd it would probably turn them off to relationships far mroe than prostitution. and most have lower hourly rates than a good call girl or boy.

Participantmany business enterprises ruin people physically and mentally and we allow them to continue.
many people work only to support children–why would we deny prostitutes the right to pursue their chosen trade? Is it irrational to work for 180 an hour versus 8 an hour and take on more risk and more emotional drain, esp. when you ahve no other skill or trade, and a family to support?
and there are many prostitutes who are not “ruined” mentally or physically, just as the majority of drug users are not ruined mentally or physically.
I guess i’d need more data on the “ruination of male and female prostitutes.
eliot spitzer’s prostitute seemed to be doing better than most of us.

Participanti think it has something to do with possessive monogamy. serial monogamy became socially acceptable because it’s not that far off from non-serial possessive monogamy. prostiution calls socil order into question. when sex is separated from “relationships” people feel threatened. somehow i think the world might be a little better with a bit less possessive monogamy. i agree with chester brown.

Participantand male prostitutes, are they also generally doing it because of adverse childhoods?

Participantactual interviews with actual sex workers might be different than expectations.

Participantmany women apparently go into prostitution because it pays well and they prefer it to other forms of work.
women don’t like to have abortions, but it seems rather paternalistic to tell them they may not exercise control over their bodies. Probably some pregnancies occur due to childhood issues, but we still allow adult women to determine how they will use their bodies.
Also, many women have sex with men for reasons that may be because of bad childhoods and don’t get paid. would you criminalize that type of sex as well?

ParticipantHuman trafficking is probably a vanishingly small portion of paid sex encounters. Some housecleaners may have been procured under similar circa but we don’t criminalize housecleaning.

ParticipantWouldn’t the churchgoers say it’s wrong to have any nonmarital sex. Prostitution would be no worse for them, right?

ParticipantBut why stop it?

Participantbeing honest often doesn’t work well, as a matter of male-female relationships. people tend not to want actual radical honesty.
probably a lot of guys would prefer prostutes. but there is a lot of social stigma associated with it, as demonstrated in that book. Also you can get arrested.
im not sure why prostitution is actually illegal anymore.

Participantis it that you need the ego boost of someone seeming to be into you? if so, why?
maybe friends and family and a prostitute are enough. maybe you don’t really need these “girlfriends”.

ParticipantYou cannot definitely achieve success by your own efforts but you can definitely achieve failure all by yourself.
