Note that I am in the slab business so I my opinion is not without bias but I will offer it anyway. Using granite tile IMHO is half a step up from ceramic tile in appearance and you still have the grout lines to deal with…. which in my experience is the number one reason my clients remove the existing tile in the first place.
Granite tiles do not look anywhere near as good as slab granite. While you may not get 100% of your investment in slab granite back if you are installing it in a house to sell you WILL make the kitchen much more appealing than graite tile.
12K for a kitchen sounds quite high to me unless the kitchen is very big or they have selected a very expensive material. My average kitchen runs between $5-$6k including demo of the existing tops. We import our own stone and do not sub any of the granite fabrication or installation, it is all in house.

rnenParticipantI own a granite slab yard and we do the fabricating and installation as well. I would be happy to give her a qoute. Our website is Rockyourhome.com.
In regards to Ikea cabinets… we have a 10 year warranty on our installation on standard cabinets but only a year on Ikea stuff. All the cabs I have seen sit on plastic adjustable legs rather than boxes, that is why we do not warranty as long. For solid surface installers they are a pain in the ass and in my opinion not as stable as standard cabinets.
Do your research on the various types of tops, not all stone tops are granite and not all are suitable for kitchen counters. If you decide on granite insist on seeing what the seams look like, they should be almost invisible and completely smooth to the touch when finished. Find out if you can pre-approve layouts and seams ect. Make sure you get the slabs you choose. My advise is to take pics of the slabs.

rnenParticipant

Between the Fox News crews, the Prop 8 supporters, and the “Obama is Hitler” crowd, I’ll just as soon stay away.
I didn’t like the stimulus bill either. But why attend a protest where I have a serious distaste for about 95% of the other attendees?
exactly.
and most of the old guys there are al on social security.
Just curious, did you get a head count when you were out there getting the back grounds of all the attendees? There were a lot more “regular” people out there than you would like to admit.
What motivates folks like you who judge whole groups of people based on absolutely nothing?
Let me try your approach …. you are either employed by the government and therefore are inhierently lazy and the only thing that keeps you in your job is the strength of your union, a bad teacher who keeps your job only for the same reasons above,on welfare because you are too lazy or stupid to get a job and want the current administration to keep extending your benifits, an illegal immigrant who dropped 3 kids while in the US and has been sponging off the system ever since or the CEO of a bank that is riding the bailout train because of your stupid greedy decisions. Thats why you did NOT attend the parties.
Wow, I did not realize how easy it is to judge people so accurately based on little to no information.
Count me in, I’m coming over to your side!
