ParticipantSo there will never be another boom again?
I agree that California’s economy was pretty heavily leveraged on sectors that do well during the up part of economic cycles. Wait, what was that last word. Cycle… cycle.
Just as when times were good people felt the good times would last forever, there’s an emotional tendency for people to think economic downturns will last forever. The smart money buys when everyone else is scared to and sells when everyone else still thinks there is gas in the tank.
By 2011 people will have all but forgotten the recession, and 2012-2013 will be a new boom.

Participant
And I don’t love anything. Love is a strong word. I don’t walk into a house and say that I’m in love with it.
A house doesn’t bring up any special feelings to me. Neither does a car or any other object. They maybe nice to have… but I don’t need them that bad to “complete” me.
“Love” may be a strong word. It’s generally shorthand for “find very appealing without too much need for modification and fitting most if not all of my needs”. It’s a lot closer to saying “I love your outfit” or “I love chocolate” than telling your partner or child “I love you”.poorgradstudent

ParticipantIf we find something we love at an ok price, we’ll buy. There’s a couple neighborhoods we are watching closely for something to go on sale that we dig. We’re also trying to buff up our down payment from ~5% to closer to 10% to help a little with the monthly payment math.
My personal opinion is the overall San Diego market will be pretty flat for the next couple of years. Another 5% dip in price could be nice, but I don’t really think we’ll see another 15-20% haircut from current levels.

ParticipantCalifornia’s consitution needs to be rewritten. Anytime the public can mandate spending with a simple majority but needs more than a majority to approve a tax increase, you’re headed for fiscal disaster. Prop 13 was a well intentioned problem maker, and CA has so many mandated spending programs the general fund has no real flexibility.
It will be interesting to see if Arnold can reform the prison system. Those on the right would love to break the union, and those of us on the left would like to see a shrinkage of the prison-industrial complex. There’s definitely room to cut spending in a way that has broad public appeal.
