Just found out I could have gotten the LG Stylo 2 Plus smart phone free as well as the free lines. Seems bigger if not better than my current LG G3. Probably too late now though.
I am not familiar with that LG phone. But it is
Not too late if you want to deal with a phone call to T-Mobile. T-Mobile has 30 day change period. Give them a call, they will most likely comp you the phone.I did that with my S7 I ordered for work. I didn’t wait for the promotion, and the next week they offered a free VR glasses. They ended up just comping me for it. Though it was a waste since I don’t regularly use either the S7 or the VR gear. Just for testing. I hate dealing with Samsung phones so at the end of the day, it’s the last thing I want to carry home.
The pixel is probably the only phone I would actually spend my own money on if I had to. T-Mobile offered 1/2 rebate on it.
Spending time with customer service is not something I enjoy. My G3 seems good enough. Not worth the effort, I’m either extremely busy or extremely lazy. More likely both.
Totally understand. I called them up, enter my mobile callback number, and then after about 20 minutes, someone from tmobile calls me back and I talk to them. I didn’t actually stay on hold waiting for them, fyi.
I tried to do their chat message system but they didn’t even respond after 15 minutes so I didn’t want to call. But glad my brother isn’t lazy. I will be getting two of the phones shipped to me in three days. I wonder how Tmobile is making any money? Two free lines plus two free smartphones.
Most people will be paying for $100-150/month for 4 lines… Your brother and I are probably a few that pay around $60/month for 4 lines. They’ll make up the profits over the next few years because once they got all of your family members on the same plan, it’s much less likely you will switch, even if prices stay the same.
Plus, for the next quarter, they will be able to brag about how their subscriber base grew, which is always good news for their earnings call. T-mobile is trying to grab market share from the other 3 and trying to retain customers with their deals and friendly customer service. I think it’s working. They are basically doing what verizon wireless use to be like, although with an arguably crappier network. (San diego is ok…Places like SF is terrible.. I can’t even get a uber cab in the SFO terminal)
My brother was paying $127 for four lines. Added two free and I’m paying him $60 for my two lines. I think there are very few like you paying $60 for 4 lines. Been happy with data in San Diego so far. Reason I got data is you sort of need it when you travel for things like Uber. I can’t imagine it would be that bad. Otherwise, no one would be using Tmobile outside of San Diego.

ParticipantMy brother had to call tmobile to activate my voicemail and the rep told him there will be a BF promotion of free iphone for porting your number to tmobile. Not advertised yet but seems to good to be true though.
plm
ParticipantHopefully apple has a BF deal but I don’t think they advertised anything. I need a comforter so I suppose I should go to Macys too.
plm
ParticipantThat two lines of tmobile was a really good deal. Finally succumbed and got data for my smartphone. Was on prepaid before so now I get two unlimited everything lines and my brother gets $60/mo from me for adding the two free lines.
Now if anyone knows where to get an iPhone 7 on BF. Saw lots of deals but none for tMobile.

ParticipantState cap gain can’t be right since the highest possible is 13.3 and if you were paying the highest rate, you would have to pay the 20 percent fed rate plus the 3.8 medicare rate as well.
I don’t want to be a landlord either but decided not to sell because I would be paying 20 + 3.8 + state tax.
More likely I’ll figure out how to do a 1031 exchange to get a vacation home after renting it out first to meet 1031 rules.
plm
ParticipantThe 401K is just tax deferred so that needs to be taken into account in the math. Taxes will have to be paid at some point. I wonder if the rate could actually be higher when you retire and the way I understand it, you have to start taking money out at a certain age.
Backdoor roth ira took me several days to figure out and about a week to execute. But once you have all the accounts set up it and taxes figured out shouldn’t be too hard to repeat. Hopefully doing it again this year will be easier.

ParticipantWeather outside affects the temp where the thermostat is so its not possible to use a single temp setting. On hotter days, need to make the temp higher to avoid freezing.
I’m not very handy. I think its easier to replace the thermostat than to relocate since you need to fish wires and also patch the old hole. New thermostat also gives voice control. Hoping to program the thermostat to use the remote sensor when it detects a person in that room and just the main thermostat if I’m elsewhere.
plm
ParticipantRemote sensor is important for me because its a large house and I’ve got the vents adjusted to give more cooling/heat to the master bedroom. But the thermostat is not in the master so its really difficult to dial in the proper temp so I have to get it up and adjust it when its too cold or hot. Sensor would fix the problem of measuring an accurate temp in the master while the Echo should let me adjust without touching a thing.
Downstairs unit, I don’t care about since its hardly ever used.
Perfect use case for me but not for everyone.

Participant
spdrun, I have used thermostat that have dial up interfaces back in the day.
Nest is the only one with auto away features as far as I know.
True, smart home companies want the data. They are working with utility companies.
SDGE gives out free ecobee thermostats if you allow them to mess with your temperature during peak demand.
Looked at the ecobee offer from SDGE since I just bought one. The one they are offering is a cheaper model. The Ecobee3 that I bought has the remote temp sensor support which I bought it for and also the auto way feature but not planning on using that.

ParticipantI’m trying to automate things in my house as well and I chose Amazon since I don’t carry my smartphone around with me when at home. Several Echo’s placed around the house allow music and light switch control via voice commands but they do need to integrate in more devices. I’ll be more automated once I install an Ecobee thermostat I just bought.
But to be honest, the main use is music.
I’ve found the most important thing is ease of use so voice commands is a must for me. Google Home may be interesting when it’s available.

this thread had the info about paying to get the payoff amount calculated first. I wanted to pay it off a couple of years ago but I wanted the tax break that year and was afraid that paying off the whole thing would not count. Seems like it might have worked but now I’m in the AMT so no reason for me not to pay if off.
