“If you can’t discuss politics 100% dispassionately then, in my opinion, you shouldn’t discuss them with anyone you’d prefer not to loose as a friend. Even if you can you are playing with fire. As the posts in this discussion (and so many like them) demonstrate, many have a complete lack of respect for views that differ from their own, and often that disrespect extends to disrespecting the other viewholder as a person. Because of this lack of respect, or perhaps by virtue of a feeling of intellectual and/or moral superiority, many insult the differing views or the person holding them or feel required to teach/correct the poor ignoramus on what is Correct Thought. ”
Uh, Yeah – GOOD LORD IS RIGHT!

ParticipantListen, I’m 56 years old and it has never been like this before.
Just last night I went to see Cindy Sheehan speak at Cal State San Marcos. I hadn’t bothered to mention this plan to my mother because she is also (like your friend) an ignorant person when it comes to the obvious truth in what is going on in this country. My mom gets most of her opinions from all the crap her ignorant friends forward her on the internet.
Anyway, I knew better than to even mention to her that I was going to Sheehan’s speech because I knew it would unleash a lot of stupid, false accusations about Sheehan – and sure enough, when I had to tell her where I was going because she was here when I left, she had to tell me how Cindy Sheehan was estranged from her son for a long time and how her son was a lifer and died for what he believe in – both BS. I just flatly told her that she was wrong and that she should check her sources and left for Cal State.
This is the first time in my life (and I came of age during the Vietnam war) that I have felt such venom towards people who still cling to the belief and confidence that G effen Bush knew/knows what he is doing and it’s for our national security.
I went to Cal State with a few tissues expecting to shed a few tears when listening to Sheehan’s talk and I was going to show support to a mother who lives with the reality that her son gave his life for our country bumpkin president. But it was nothing like that. her speech was fantastic and she is running for Nancy Pelosi’s seat in the house, because she feels that the democratic party is not acting on the voters’ mandate to defund the war and start getting us out of Iraq.
But her bigger issue with Pelosi is that Pelosi has tabled the impeachment of Bush and Cheney and when she gets elected (and if there ever was a place it could happen it would be San Francisco) she says she will bring it to the floor every day. http://www.cindyforcongress.org watch the video and you will get a sense of the sincerity of this woman who has taken her grief to a higher plain
So, in answer to your inquiry, I have lost respect for people who think that there is anything redeeming about this administration but I, like Cindy Sheehan, believe that the Democrats don’t have the guts to do what needs to be done – and that includes to two Democratic candidates.

C’mon, give me a break – I may be confused but I’m not stupid. I don’t know how many of you have been depositing to IRA’s for 33 years but, used to just find the best place to park the money and then basically forget about it, that has worked rather well over the years. Now with the economy in a shambles, and considering that we’re quickly approaching retirement, I need to pay more attention. I agree that I could always use some financial advice.
Very interesting… yesterday at the bank there was no one else opening or depositing to IRA’s but me. Asked the account rep about the lack of business and she said that, of course, this is usually the busiest time of the year but there had been very few depositers this year. So here is another way to track the state of the economy – how much IRA money was deposited this year?
Also, every year there are newspaper ads this time of year for banks’ IRA accounts, this year I saw none.
