ParticipantDeadzone, did you enlist or pursue a commission? You certainly seem to be putting yourself out there as an expert. Perhaps you had not developed any political views by 18. When I was 18, I voted in my first election. It happened to be the election of 1988. I was registered as a Republican and voted for George Bush. I was also very patriot, even then.

ParticipantAs for why the military tends to support Republicans, “groupthink” is certainly designed to make Democrats feel superior. How about this? Could it be that Republican military members were Republican before they signed up and before they even became part of the group? Do you think that Democrats who sign up go through some brainwashing program that turns them into mindless Republicans?
Maybe there are just more Republicans out there who feel that they are doing the right thing by joining the armed services and standing ready to give back to this great country.

ParticipantI said that I thought the President should be required to serve. Do I really need to spell out the military history of our recent presidents? Don’t we all know it already? The fact that I do not think I needed to provide a list is not an indication of whether or not I know the military history of my representatives.
My beef was and is with the partisan nature of the list provided and that it was held up as some sort of proof. There are hundreds of elected officials in Washington. Do you know the military history of them all? Further, we all only vote for a small number of those people.
A partial list is worthless.

ParticipantDidn’t anybody crack even a teeny smile at Ricky the Squirrel’s story? I thought that just maybe some people who don’t like my politics might unbend a little bit and chuckle at my joke.
I was trying to lighten things up but I guess it did not work very well. 🙁

ParticipantVery true, zk. This is exactly the sort of thing that drives prices down.

ParticipantLike my admission that I could be wrong about Matthews, you could have stood up and admitted that your list was incomplete and biased. Instead, you tried to condemn me for not paying attention to the consequences this war is having on the soldiers who fight it.
My husband served in Iraq. He is active duty. I have many, many friends and neighbors who have served, are serving and/or will be serving in Iraq again. I see the consequences all the time.

ParticipantIf you really wanted to provide proof or facts, you would provide complete lists. For instance, you have included some Supreme Court Justices. Where are the rest of them? You have included people appointed during this administration. Have you included people appointed to those same posts during a democratic presidency?
There may a be a few people out there nodding their heads as they read your “list.” Those people were in agreement with you before they even started reading. I doubt that you have persuaded anyone to your side who did not already start out with that bias.
PD
ParticipantThat is certainly a list (of something). What exactly were your parameters for including or excluding people? You have some currently serving, some formerly serving, some appointed people. You still aren’t proving anything.
PD
ParticipantKJM, I stated that I have not watched Chris Matthews in years and can’t speak for his current views. Do all people agree with their siblings? Are party lines written in DNA?
PD
ParticipantSince you are so hung up on the “facts” KJM, why don’t YOU compile a complete list of military service for all of our elected officials?
PD
ParticipantContrary to what some people seem to think, O’Reilly does have many valid points. I also disagree with him on occasion. Sometimes my disagreement is severe, sometimes mild. I happen to have severely disagreed with him a few nights ago. I am not a strict party-line kind of person. I make up my own mind. For instance, I throw away those voter suggestion packets I receive from the Republican party without looking at them and vote as I see fit.
I used to watch Chris Matthews every night. Sometimes I agreed with him, sometimes I disagreed with him. At the time I was watching him, he had an obvious liberal slant (I have not watched him in years so I can’t speak for his current views). O’Reilly has an obvious conservative slant.
KJM, as for your facts about military service, I have not provided what you are demanding because I think it a silly point and have no interest in wasting hours slogging through records to find what you have demanded. I thought your post about military service was so obviously cherry picked as to be proof of nothing. You also have mixed in elected officials with TV/radio personalities. And that proves what exactly?
Your work for the benefit of military families is commendable. Have they asked you to speak up on their behalf?
PD
ParticipantI do not blame Clinton for all of our woes. However, I certainly do not glorify him for his “relative peace” either.
Gosh, I keep forgetting that I’ve lost 50+ IQ points from watching O’Reilly…..PD
ParticipantAn argument that I find particularly silly is when people say, “How can you do (insert action) when (insert big event) is going on?”
Examples:
“How can you spend $30.00 on dinner when people in Ethiopia are starving?”
“How can you talk about John Kerry when there is a war going on?”So, kristinejm, I take it you have completely put your life on hold because we are at war? You haven’t bought a new pair of shoes in three years? Or a car? Taken a vacation? Done something frivolous? Enjoyed a moment? Took pleasure in life?
Are you a military wife? Have you driven by these lines yourself? I am on base all the time and have not seen them, although there is assistance available to those who need it.

ParticipantMy fanciful mind added the following to this story about a squirrel attack:
Ricky the Squirrel has had enough. After endless hours of hearing John Kerry’s remarks and the resultant media firestorm broadcast through the open window, Ricky reached his breaking point. The pain of hearing his hero’s ignominy continuously broadcast left Ricky feeling helpless. His metal state was in such turmoil that when confronted by a public employee in uniform, he went a little a crazy. “I just wanted to do something to show my solidarity,” he sobbed as he was driven away in the animal control van.
