Participant
That’s too bad for you, but no reason to be hating on the Universities where people have fun too.
No, it’s not to bad for me at all, and I’m certainly not “hating” (the latest PC/lib term used to demonize someone they don’t agree with).
I was doing more research into this issue of football/party schools and academics. One of the main criteria used to rank party schools is their football program.
The reality is this: These are schools where kids go to party, watch sports and not much else get’s done.

Participant

But to suggest there is any correlation between academics and athletics is misguided.
Maybe not a 1:1 correlation, but in my list these schools (for the most part) happen to have poor academics but prefer big investments in football. And that’s really all they’re known for – they make no other significant contributions.
LSU and Auburn for example have close to 90% acceptance rates. U of Phoenix has a lower acceptance rate!
A degree from any one of the schools on your list is 100 times more prestigious than one from U. of Phoenix. Plus while attending any of those schools you can actually enjoy your college experience with sports, partying, hot chicks, myriad of social and extra curricular activities on top of outstanding academic programs and facilities.
You clearly have no concept of University life, did actually attend a University yourself?
I didn’t have those luxuries; I went to school to learn, acquire knowledge and skills so I could support myself.

I do believe it’s a really amazing locale to raise kids (and big dogs) in …. probably the best in the country. Especially in Montgomery and Frederick County, MD and Fairfax and Loudoun County, VA.
“Bucolic” is the only word I can think of which describes this region adequately.
I owned a house/property in Frederick County and lived there for a number of years. I lived in a subdivision, but my nearest neighbor was about 100 feet to my left and right.

The idea of a prairie or tropical home with grass in SD is anachronistic and contradictory to the environment. Santa Luz has the idea of appropriate landscaping, imo.
Humans have changed and shaped their environment for thousands of years and will continue to do so.
Most want real green grass for lawns; not rocks or carpet.

I agree -> So Cal is overrated for weather IMO.
SD weather = Booorrring!

I’d also argue the existance of schools like UCLA and USC as proof at least some universities can have it all in terms of academics and athletics and social scene. University of Michigan is another that stands out in my mind; they’ve had some dominant sports teams but it’s also academically prestigious.
Yes, but they often have very low standards when it comes to sports and admissions.

ParticipantOk – yes my list is subjective and I might have been off on a few of them.
Seriously though, some of the comments above are outrageous:
“I went to a party school, SDSU, and proud of it.”
“To lack a D-1 athletic program with some achievements is to lack the money to achieve.”
“All large universities could be considered party schools even the ones that are so called “elite”. The presence or absence of top sports programs has nothing to do with anything.”
IMO, A true university should be a place where students who are prepared go to learn and hopefully discover new knowledge. Not throw a ball around.
It is decadence. Excess. Ridiculous.
No other countries do this.
And yes, I would agree that UCSD is a true university.
High academic standards with rigor. The true definition of a University.
Most who attend Florida State would be better off attending Phoenix – at least you’re more likely to come out with real skills.
Florida State is a classic example of a so-called university that should be seriously reformed. It’s a joke.

Maybe the kids on athletic scholarships might actually learn something while at university and decide what to do with their lives.
Actually it’s a huge disservice IMO.
IMO a university should exist for the purpose of true higher learning and research.
Sports and football should be secondary, and yet these schools focus and market almost soley on football and to a lesser extent other sports.
Most of these athletes would be much better served learning trades, since only a very small few will play pro sports with many graduating with fake degrees in worthlessness.
paramount
ParticipantNo way – most of the schools on that list are where you go to avoid going to work. Have fun and party for 4 or more years.

is pizza really discretionary? it seems to fall into almost the quasimandatory realm. maybe not a whole pie, perhaps, but living in nyc, a slice. i think even the homeless subsist in large part on pizza.
ever since oggis closed in temecula, though, pizza doesnt really exite me here. spuntinos, is good, i guess. is there a pizza place you love that I’ve missed? Sometimes utopizza, which was coupon driven for a while, but i find th ename kind of embarrassing, and the pizza unamazing.
Good point about pizza. I do like spuntinos although lately we’ve been going to Marcos for the gluten free pizza.
At this point I would probably consider Times Square to be the best pizza in Temecula. I also like Shakeys.
Best pizza chain IMO is: Grimaldi’s Pizza (coal fired).
Nearest one though is El Segundo although I’ve only been to the Vegas locations.
You’re right, screw that: pizza’s back on baby!

Participant
I am not saying you’er wrong I am just trying to figure out what the trigger would be (for next recession).
Low Oil prices? (I think this is more just the Saudis dumping oil than anything else).
Consumers? (I was out shopping yesterday and the carts were five deep at all the check-out stands and all the stands were open) (out to eat same thing, standing room only).
I am just not seeing the trigger this time.
I see the same things, and to be honest I’m not sure. I do see that GDP dropped each quarter in 2015 until we saw 0.6% Q4.
I suspect credit is keeping things going for consumers. I went to Buca di Beppo last night and it was packed.
The auto industry boomed last year IMO because of very easy credit.

As for recession, doesn’t seem that likely at the moment. The Fed is going to keep rates low until they see real inflation.
