API = great way for parents to figure out if they’ll fit in socioeconomically.
How so?
the correlation between socioeconomic standing of a community and the API of the schools within the community is almost a perfect match.
the rise of San Marcos High is the perfect example. Dramatic influx of upper middle income group from SEH and eastern Carlsbad reshaped the school.
the only exception to this rule is if a school is Asian dominated, it can achieve higher API even if it is lower on the socioeconomic scale.
such is the case of MMHS, from the census data, looks like there’s been some significant white flight of 5k in 92126 over the last 10 years, with all Asian replacements, result is higher API without the dramatic socioeconomic change seen with San Marcos.

ocrenterParticipant
Alright, if you take exception to those special schools in SDUSD, lets look at the top 5 traditional HS in SDUSD.
Scripps Ranch High 900
Mira Mesa High 861
La Jolla High 854
University City High 825
Point Loma High 812Now, lets reorder the PUSD:
Westview High 872
Poway High 868
Del Norte High 865
Rancho Bernardo High 848
Mt. Carmel High 821So, the top SDUSD school score 28 points higher than the top PUSD school. The 5th SDUSD school score 9 points lower than the 5th PUSD school. So, SDUSD have a bigger varriance than PUSD. Now, the average for PUSD is still slightly higher. PUSD average is 854 while SDUSD average is 850. That’s less than 0.5% different. Not a big deal to me.
When you count those special schools w/in SDUSD, then the top 7 schools does out pace PUSD. I don’t know why you take exception to those special schools w/in SDUSD. If you live in SDUSD and want to, you can apply to get your kids into those special schools, minus the Preuss School. If you just count traditional HS, then SDUSD, IMHO, is on par with PUSD.
SDUSD north of the 52 is on par with PUSD.
ocrenterParticipantok uco, I stand corrected.

ocrenterParticipantdespite CARB, CA still occupy 9 of the top 10 cities on the worse smog list of the country. SD is actually #7 smoggiest of the country.
geography and climate and over-reliance on cars are to blame.
So what should we do if CARB is too strict? let loose since we’re going to have smog no matter what? what would be the alternative?
ocrenterParticipant
Let’s see… there is this group of thugs that kills people who disagree with them….
Someone protested publicly against them, a 14 year old girl… and she was shot.
Now people who don’t show up are getting called stupid.
Did you ever stop to think that maybe they did not show up because they didn’t want to get identified?
It is easy for people who live in a civil society to not have a clue what it is like to live in a much more lawless area.
Maybe those who didn’t show up are smart, not stupid.
the Taliban is able to exist there because a large portion of the population allow it to exist.
you talk about fear driving a lot of people, that’s because there’s so many Taliban sympathizers within the population that if you go to the protest, you can be fingered and targeted by neighbors.
ocrenterParticipant
Have you ever spent substantial time in Texas?
sorry, just going along with the spirit of the OP joke. If they can make fun of us, I think they can handle the back and forth just fine.

Texans? who needs ’em.
teens = coyote, in Texas they would criticize the “good samaritan” for the pathetic 50% kill rate.

October 11, 2012 at 10:03 AM in reply to: Anyone charge a service fee for repairs on their rentals? #752466ocrenterParticipant

+1 for what Flu said in both of his posts
You can charge whatever fee’s you want (if residents are willing to pay it). For example, late fee’s. This doesn’t mean the resident has to pay them. If you go to court over late fee’s, the judge will NOT rule in your favor.
When I was looking for a tenant, one prospective tenant insisted that my grace period was too short (3 business days versus other doing 5 days) and that the late fee of 6% was higher than others (5%)… I immediately said, well, you’re not planning to be late are you? Why can’t you just mail the check a week earlier, or use bill pay…. Dead silence…To me, that was a red flag right there…I never called the person back….
FWIW: I’ve never collected any late fees from my tenants, even if they were late unless they are egregiously late by a few weeks…But I do send out a reminder to tenant when they are late telling them to please review the contract about late fees… I do this to remind them, I’m cutting them some slack…which is more than a lot of creditors (like credit card companies do)…So the next time, a light bulb goes out, go buy your own light bulb and get it changed yourself.
agree FLU, that was a big red flag.
as a tenant for 5 years, we didn’t pay too much attention to the late fee policy in the few leases we signed, simply because paying rent late was not even in our vocabulary.
ocrenterParticipantthe Texas deficit came about because of reduced sales tax collected during the recession.
answer: initiate coyote breeding program. increase need for gun and ammo purchases. thus increase sales tax revenue.
ocrenterParticipant
we fully anticipate this job to be long term and to offer a lot of upside potential for my husband. now having said that we do like to plan for a worst case senerio so that is why I mentioned irvine having more jobs for him.
I think you’ll be very happy with Fullerton. very nice neighborhood and school is top rate. Western part of the city would go to Sunny Hills High, and it would be just a few minutes away from the Buena Park Metrolink station. assuming 5 min to the station, 35 min on the metrolink and 10 min to office, that’s not too bad.
