ParticipantRealize that if you get a permit and your neighbor can prove that it was incorrectly granted, you cannot defend yourself by saying “the government said it was ok.”. Be sure (ie find a land use lawyer) if this is a big investment.

College degrees which will not lead to employment are worthless, IMHO, unless the student is using them to get into grad school (ex: poly sci). )
You never know if you’re going to get into grad school. There are no pre law requirements, so why not major in something like engineering or science just in case the grad plans don’t work? Plus, lawyers with poli sci degrees are a dime a dozen. Have something in your educational resume that is useful (nursing, engineering, accounting, etc.) Another choice is to double major – and one should have a job at the end . . .

Participant
The article’s author did a poor job of explaining the issue, and explaining the courts decision’s potential implications. She went for the sensationalist approach, I think.
Textbook publishers often have cheaper versions of their books for sale in developing countries that have identical contents, but sell for a fraction of what they do in the US. In this case, a Thai student bought and imported a large amount of these books from Thailand, then sold them via eBay, reportedly racking up $1.2 million (not clear whether that was gross sales or profit).
Even if the courts side with the publisher, the decision would have to do with circumventing regular distribution channels, and will have no effect whatsoever on any of us who occasionally buy or sell used stuff.
Hmmm. I don’t think you’re right.

Participant
It can’t be copyright infringement. There is no copy being made.
Look up “first sale doctrine.” Resale of a copyrighted work is OK only because there is a law that says it’s ok. Copyright law has been around for 300 years, but the “first sale” exception has only been around since the early 1900s. At issue is whether the first sale doctrine applies to goods manufactured overseas. “Subject to certain limitations, a copyright owner has the exclusive right to . . . . distribute copies of the work to the public by sale, donation, rental, or lending;” (Harvard University Office of the General Counsel)
People don’t realize how amazingly broad Copyright law is. Most people engage in copyright infringement every day.
I do agree with your economic analysis. Plus, there is the likelihood that upholding the lower court’s finding would drive manufacturing overseas. Not a desirable result.

Along with the genius comes a whole host of problems from ansyncronous development to social problems. These kids are picked on and bullied also. My daughter refused to even go to public school. So, the GATE seminar program understands all these factors and helps these kids. Without the GATE program, my genius kid would most likely drop out of school eventually. Does that help you understand?
Hmm – does finding out that the word is “asynchronous” help YOU understand your children’s difficulties better? Spelling it right always helps with the Google searching.
Also – IQ generally does not change with age, so whether they’re 8 or 88 doesn’t matter.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Without unions, the money would go to “capitalists” who “own” the system.
Ok – are they not capitalists? Do they not own the system? What are the quotes for? I have to say I thought this was a post by bearishgurl. If you are not quoting someone you don’t need quotes. Rant over.

Is there a trade mark search engine? Just wondering… And does miraval mean anything? In Spanish? Italian?
Go to http://www.uspto.gov and navigate to trademark search. Use the basic search unless you are familiar with the system.

Participant
Anyone else notice they had to change the name of this development from Miraval to Maricel because someone else had the name trademarked?
You would have thought they would have checked before naming the development. Oh well…
Miraval is actually protected as a service mark, not a trademark. Don’t know how they can enforce it, as the real estate companies are selling real estate, not services ( but I’m sure an argument could be made).

Participant
it’s all pretty clear to a lot of us right now. But it was also pretty clear to lots of folks i knew back in the 70s that gay sex was immoral. period.
for people who want to exclude gays from marriage, it probably isn’t framed as a “freedom” issue. It’s just plain immoral. they do have quite a bit of history on their side. Government does get to legislate on these types of issues–moral issues–so long as the government has a rational basis to do so…
but doesn’t it kinda make you wonder what we’re blind to now? It’s unlikely we’ve reached the apex of an understanding, humane society. Far from it. So what are we repulsed by now, that in 30 years, will be clearly worthy of inclusion and understanding?
My guess is that the next step is polygamy. Don’t know whether it’s worthy of inclusion/understanding. But it was banned for the same moralistic reasons that gay marriage was. Who are we to say how many people can be in a marriage?

Supposedly Julian Assange had consensual sex with women he met before. But he refused to wear a condom when they asked him. Is that rape or not?
That doesn’t sound consensual.

ParticipantSo so so glad to be out of NJ and back in CA. A few years ago I saw a collection of six word essays. My favorites were “New Jersey to California, thank God” and ” Must remember: people, gadgets, that order.”. I quote the second one to my kids, a lot.
