How is this different than a Catholic believing that homosexuality and premarital sex is OK? Isn’t he just picking and choosing also? How about a picture of a Catholic going to Sunday mass then going out with his buddies to a gay bar?
millennialParticipant
Boomer youngsters thought that a Hugh Hefner lifestyle was the life. A model lying on Ferrari is hot. Now that they’re old, boomers think that playing golf at a Trump resort is the life. To millenials, that’s just quaint and laughlable. Not advanced in thinking.
Millenials are more educated. Sure, there are hippie boomers. But just broad demographic generalization here.
Exactly. You boomers are quite a funny bunch.
millennialParticipant
Things are suppressed, lies are told, symptoms are exaggerated or mis-attributed as to their origins. That’s social engineering. NPR is big on this.
NPR is a news source and as a news source afflicted with some media bias. I wouldn’t say that they have a specific agenda like Fox News per se, but they do sensationalize some stories to promote the illusion that they are on top of social change. This being said, a news agency like NPR should focus on social change since they are a national news organization and needs to look and reflect on macro issues.
millennialParticipant
Gay marriage and double male or double female or male head of households with children are perhaps more of an experiment than a change. We need more generations than just yours and mine to determine if it is a lasting change. My guess is that it is totally a situational outcome , that is quite possibly temporary and isolated in this place and time.
Baby boomers did not create greed. Moses new about it. The cult of materialism also can also swing.
I don’t think it’s an experiment, but the future. How many generations does it take to move from experiment to an actual change? Do you think that the LGBT communities will go away like a fad? Do you think that they will want to stop having children? These things are going to last a long time. Millenials didn’t create gays and lesbians, Moses knew about it.
Also I never said boomers created greed, but may be the first generation in America to hold it as a virtue.

SAHDadism, is not “serious” as in bad, but as in affecting or being an effect of social norms changing more than someone cross dressing. Same thing for women on combat ships. This guy doesn’t change anything compared to women being on combat ships, or heaven forbid, being president of a violent nation.

I think men and women should die in war equally. Why should women play it safe and stay home and work? Oh yes, men are still more disposable, now that is sexist and archaic.
There are many things changing norms, and there always will be. I think you are correct that changing the way one dresses does not really have any lasting impact, when compared to SAHDism, or which bathroom a women has to use on a combat ship. But I would say that there are many more significant things than a dad staying home instead of mom. How about gay marriage and two dad/mom households? How about mixed race families? In retrospect your generation made a much larger impact with dual incomes; which led to the creation of latchkey kids, increased the prices and sizes of homes, and increased discretionary spending with their greed is good mentality. I think I remember seeing a bumper sticker on a Boomer’s car when I was a kid. Something about the person who dies with the most toys wins. I think this would probably sum up the Boomer generation best.

i better run this tat tax by some focus groups first.
Make sure you shake and slam your fist a lot while you’re doing it!

NPR is in on the social engineering. Lots of millenials hate it, and the likes of SJW’s like Hillary.A more serious factor is that the number of stay at home dads has doubled since the 70’s and even in duel income houses the female could be more qualified as the bread winner. This changes things more than fads. Females on combat ships?
I don’t know if there is any social engineering going on regarding gender roles/norms. To me it seems like we are just moving to a more equal society.
Also don’t understand why an increase of stay at home dads would be considered serious? Are fathers not able to do the things a stay at home mother can do? Also not sure how this ties into females on combat ships? Also don’t understand what your point is…are you being sexist saying that women do not belong on combat ships? If anything, wouldn’t it be better if women were bread winners, so men could go out to sea and fight while their wives are making money to feed the family and keeping America’s companies running?

npr says gender norms are out 4 millenials…I agree in terms of ways to self-express, mixing up norms is a way to get yourself noticed. Does it mean that all millenials are out there dressing drag to display their artistic side? I would say a very small percentage because once it becomes a part of popular culture it loses value. My sister dressed goth in middle school and older kids dressed like Boy George. Clothing and dress has always been an outlet for self expression…especially for adolescents.
millennialParticipant
lets not get crazy. its just a tax, like on cigs.
Good thing you’re not running for President. Not sure which group will vote for you…I’m thinking big government and socially conservative. Will your country be fascist like Germany, or will it be a dictatorship like Iraq?

I’m lucky because in my 40s I still look young and feel young. I can relate
to both old and young. My young relatives treat more like a peer.Boomers are selfish. The grew up polluting the environment. As youngsters, they tinkered with their muscle/sports cars. Even as old men, they drive polluting Harleys. They think nothing of dumping used motor oil in the ground, or hunting deers for fun. They would go grenade fishing if they could. They think a Trump hotel resort is badass.
Millennials are more thoughtful. To them a Trump hotel (or anything overly ornate) has an ick factor. They recycle. They don’t really like cars. They are less into brand name and badass stuff. They want authenticity; they want more of a genuine experience for their money.
Example: To treat themselves boomers would like a luxury cruise where they can gorge on buffets served my slave labor from poor countries.
For the same money, millennials would rather do eco tourism. Not saying all is rosy with millennials, but there’s a big contrast.
Right on.
millennialParticipant
Similarly – there is next to no dress code in our high school…I guess all generations have felt the same way ….
Children now dress a lot more provocative then when I was younger, but does this mean increased promiscuity? Does this make them a slut? When I speak to Boomers who lived in the 60’s and 70’s (pre AIDS epidemic) I heard sexual promiscuity was even greater than now. Personally, my girls will never wear a bikini to school with a denim vest…unless maybe they have swim class after school.
millennialParticipant
except about tattoos. i HATE tattoos. 40 percent of the dang millenials have tattoos! its ridiculous. i cant stand the marking of the human body. not just because it is contrary to the Torah and jewish tradition. i just think its distespectful to the body.
The source of this prohibition is Leviticus 19:28: “You shall not etch a tattoo on yourselves.” does tradition mean nothing to these people? G-d says dont scribble on your bodies! why must you deface the holy vessel that is your body?!
i would like to see tattoos discouraged, perhaps with a large tax …
How about we create a state where the government controls everything? Not only what we put on our body, but what we also put in it and how it moves? Speaking of utopian societies, do you want it more like A Brave New World, or 1984?
millennialParticipant
yep. Half of Millennials Believe Gender Isn’t Just Male Or Female.
57 perc of 18 to 34 y.o. women said gender exists on a spectrum (that is to say, fluid, or not fixed).
You need to learn how to check your sources Grandpa Simpson. not sure how many people would consider bustle.com a reputable source. Seems like you’re trolling and have some confirmation bias in the way you’re trying to source your info.
millennialParticipant
LOL LOL !!!
All I have to say is you should have been coming of age in the 70’s and early 80’s LOLThe world is a much better place now trust me.
Where I do feel the boomers failed the millennials is being over protective helicopter parents and creating the nanny state.
It left them unprepared I think for the harsher realities of the real world.
You are correct that the world is a much better place due to amazing new technologies such as internet, and alternative energy, but we have many issues that your generation left behind. We will find a way to fix it and move forward, but not without removing Boomers from places of power (eg. politics/upper management).
Boomers never failed millennials by nurturing them. I think that you underestimate us since we display compassion, and think differently. Instead of digging a hole, we will create a machine to dig it for us, or we will create an app that will source the labor from people who like digging holes. We have a lot of grit and if necessary will rise above any challenge.
