ParticipantPeople are still paying over $300k for 2/1 and 2/2 condos in the county, why do you think it is a problem for them to pay that much for a HOUSE with a YARD?
Here’s a community that I’m familiar with. These units went for about a buck and a quarter brand new in 1994.

I’m not sure how many bedrooms a couple with a child need. Seems like 2?

ParticipantWell, these places were going for about $180-200k in 1998. They doubled in price between 1998 and 2003.
I paid about $350k for my 3/1 in AG in 2003. According to the inflation calculator these houses should be worth $268k based on a 1998 value of $200k.

It sure would be nice if housing prices everywhere dropped back down to these levels. I’d be forced to walk away from my house, in that case, as I wouldn’t continue paying on something that was 30% under water.
Of course, that means that many of the CV homes that are selling for $1-1.5 million now would be selling for about about half that.
For instance, a friend of mine used to live in San Raphel in CV. They paid about $380k. They sold it a few years later for double that. There is one on the market right now for about $650k. The inflation adjusted price for this would be about $510k.

ParticipantToo suburban?
It’s 10 minutes from downtown, the beach, mission valley shopping…
It’s certainly not North Park or Hillcrest but it’s not RB or CV either.
As for expensive…
A 2br/1ba recently went for $300k down the street from me. 3bd houses are going for $350-425k. Is that expensive? It’s cheaper than most of Claremont, La Mesa, North Park, Hillcrest, Kensington and Tierrasanta for what you get.
As for the pickups and flags….anyone who has a problem with a patriotic community that still has a large portion of original owners, many who fought in WWII….feel free to look elsewhere. We won’t miss you. π
My neighbor is the original owner of his house: bought in 1954 for about $15k…

OTOH, you must admit that some cultures (including many/most Asian and European) value and have access to better educational opportunities than people coming from most Latin American or African countries. For the blacks who are descendents of slaves, there are some legitimate reasons to try and help them up more than those who come from more educated cultures/countries.[/quote]
That explains why so many of the dirt poor Lost Boys of the Sudan have immigrated to the states, completed college and gone on to have successful careers.
The only problem that your ‘descendants of slaves’ have is a cultural victim identity. Their lack of success or opportunity is everyone’s fault but their own, right? Bullshit.
I propose an experiment. Let’s take a page from Obama’s book and go to the poor areas of this country and ‘spread the wealth around’. We’ll give $200k cash to every man, woman and child and come back in 5 years and see how things are. I suspect that they will look exactly like they do now. Oh, some will have some new bling and you’ll see a few new cars but you’ll probably see most of the same faces, just 5 years older. What you probably WON’T see is people using this money to start businesses, put themselves through school or in many cases, buy themselves a house.
