Participant
LOL this is why FIRE is actually a problem.
Your meant to pursue happiness not achieve it.
Else who is going to keep everything running.
If pursuing happiness is your goal then FIRE is certainly one way that would allow you to do so.
For many people work != happiness – it just simply pay the fvcking bills.

ParticipantThe effects of the coronavirus are not fully priced in due to 1. it’s still on-going 2. nobody knows for sure what the real damage is (likely to be on the worse instead of better side). As for tariffs, it’ll take awhile before it has any real impact – it’s not like they have an armada of cargo ships running in circles in international waters waiting for the moment the tariffs are dropped to pull into port to take advantage of it. Moreover, that’s just an announcement, nothing is done until the big wigs actually signed the agreement.
BTW., saw an article about a crematorium in wuhan working non-stop daily burning about 100 bodies a day. Extrapolate that for the Wuhan and nearby provinces and you’ll see how ridiculous the “official” less than a thousand deaths is.

ParticipantI’ll go out on a limb and say that a 5-10% drop in the stock markets will occur within the next 3 months or so. The next earning reports are going to be bad (maybe with the exception of medical supply companies) due to this coronavirus thing. Airline companies, apple, fast food (KFC,MCD) they are all fvked.

Participantand for those gullible enough to believe the Chinese “official” figures of only a few thousand are infected with the related deaths of a couple hundreds. The flu infects and kills more people every year, but you don’t see entire cities getting “quarantined” like they do with Wuhan. Seems like every plane that left Wuhan had at least one infected person. That’s about 1 in 500 (.2%)? So, .2% for a city of 10 million people should yield at least about 20K infected….and you give the virus about a month to spread…what would the real figure be?

Coronavirus
….and now the bird fluWouldn’t be shocked to see a 5-10% drop in the Shanghai index once it reopened.

ParticipantThis is going to be bad. Apparently, an infected person is contagious even before the symptoms showed up. Apparently, the incubation period is as short as 3 days. There’s a case where a (infected)father went abroad to visit his son and within 3 days the son got a high fever and is confirmed to have the virus. How many people did this man infect on the trip to visit his son (via bus/plane/train)?

Participant
I’ve been thinking through my surveillance system upgrade today.
Think I’ll go with some cameras that use cloud based storage, and some that use local storage.
In that way, I can monitor strategic cameras while I’m away (the cloud cameras), but keep my bandwidth usage down and have weeks and weeks of history (local storage cameras) without paying the cloud host huge monthly fees to store it.
A side advantage: If a thief finds one system or the other, they’ll disable it and assume they’ve disabled all cameras. While that won’t be the case.
Layers of security. Like an onion.
You could monitor your security cameras remotely with the free ip camera viewer app. Upgrade to the pro version for $4 and you’ll be able to record videos remotely (create your own cloud).

Participant
UPDATE
So, I went ahead and shelled out $155 to have a Bosch certified repairman come out and look at it. My reasoning was that there is a life time warranty on the tub itself for “rust through”, and my own amateur efforts indicated it might be leaking from the tub. Also, I’d spent enough time looking at it, that I wanted to see what the problem was and it was worth $155 to the engineer in me. I kid you not, he came and spent about 10 minutes looking at it and declared, “it’s leaking from the tub” and on the bill wrote “tub leaking / welding problem”.I’ve called Bosch and they are dragging their feet replacing it saying, “we acknowledge the weld is bad but how do we know it is because of rust?”. I pointed out that they could have spent more time looking at it and they are being nit picking. It’s been about 2 weeks since the repair guy came and I’m about to buy another unit. I’ll consider reporting them to BBB. There “lifetime warranty” does not cover the $155 nor does it cover installing a replacement. Given that it only last 3.5 years, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to take delivery of a replacement if it’s going to cost close to $400. That’s assuming they offer a replacement.
Needless to say, I don’t advocate buying Bosch. I thought what you got with a higher end unit is something that lasts AND that comes with better service. Lesson learned 🙂

I say spend another $50 or so and file a breach-of-contract in small claims court. You’ll be surprised how quickly they’ll want to pay up.

ParticipantWhen it comes home appliances, I stick with the traditional “American” brands – Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Fridgidaire, etc…My purchase decision is pretty simple, buy the least expensive model with the style that I want and so far I have pretty good luck with them.
Maytag refrigerator: Still going after 12+ years
Kenmore Dryer: 17+ years (replaced the belt once)
GE Washing Machine: 12+ years (getting noisy during the spin cycle)All those were bought for around $550-$600.
The Whirlpool dishwasher and stove/micrwave that came with the house are still going strong after almost 20 years.
Would like hear from others about the brands of your appliances and their lifespan.

ParticipantAbout 5/6 years ago, I paid around $1,200 for the neighbor’s gardener to chop down 6 queen palms. Each tree was about 20′ tall. The guy showed up with 3 other guys and they took the trees down pretty quickly. So, check with the gardeners you see around your hood.
I would never, ever plant queen palms again. King, yes. Queen, eff no.

ParticipantI heard that refrain before with stocks (buy high and sell higher) and real estate (buy now and sell next year for a six-figure profit). I think all Piggs lived through those periods, but may be only some actually remember how drastic and sudden the sentiments shifted.

Participant
Retracing the same highs it’s been bouncing off since early 2018. Stagnation for 18 months, impressive.
It’s been oscillating for a while. More power to you for recognizing the pattern and hopefully profiting from it. Most of the Asian markets are down 2+ percent on (their) Monday. Looking for US and Europe to follow suit.
