I do not know the proceduce they did to find it. but it was on the wall from that are on the bedrooms and bathroom
All the property manager told us was: “We need to take all your stuff from your rooms to fix the walls. Also, we will take a sample (not sure of what: wall, insulations?) to determine if there is asbestos and if so, we need to take the asbesto out before starting any repair”.
To find out if there is asbesto they had to take it to a LAB.They told us they found it and two days ago my husband went to check the place saw the rooms tented. Not sure how, he did not take a picture but told me “Honey, the apartment looks like ET, when the FEDs go to the house to get ET out and there are white tents all over”. He said there was sign in hall saying ” to enter in this area you need special clothing and mask” so he left and we have not gone to the place again. We are waiting to get a call with some updates.
as i said i moved most of my stuff (Except the kitchen and pictures hanging on the wall) to a storage so we are just waiting.
We are trying to get more information but the property manager does not seems to know much and he is telling little by little day by day based on what the people doing the work do and based and the insurance tells him what they will pay.

kikiParticipantThanks for the comment on cable on hold.
I am already out of the apartment for 10days and property management thinks it might take 3 more weeksI am not as concerned on repairs on my unit, I know the ownwers insurance is working on it. My concern is asbestos exposure from neighbot potential improper management of repair, as I said she does not have insurance so who know if someone qualified will do the job. I read asbestos left alone are not issue but if they are exposed just one fiber in air can be dangererous. She has to do work where asbestos could be exposed, the same way that we have to do in my apartment, with the difference the owner of the place I rent is taking care of it.
Regarding utilities, I do not know if it pennies or not. This is fundamental question: I am not living there, why would I pay any part of the bill, the owner should assume that cost instead of saying only incremental of a regular month
There is definitely pain on having to rush pack for a month and luve in a hotel. Plus we are paying everything now until the insurance pays us back. So if 2 lessons learn: get rental insurance and be sure to have at least 6 months of emergency fund. Hotel (living) is 3-4 times more expensive than rent plus no cooking at home so the 6months can ran out quickly.
I have lost a couple of days of work due to having to supervise one inspection and the move but not sure if anyone (insurance or condo owner) will pay so I am writing that off.

kikiParticipantTrojan4Life,
Kiki here. i read the blog everyday but rarely post – i reserve this for brighter minds. but your question reminded me of one writer i like a lot.
Have you heard of the author Jose Saramago?
He writes really good books on what happens if ……suddently everybody went blind? Blindness
…in the next elections everybody voted blank? Seeing
…nobody dies? – people have accident and terminal diseases just do not die – Awakeningmaybe we should tell him to look into this π he has the best imagination.
Back to your question – we see various attemps like this : not to use electricity for one day or one minute of silence .. even for good causes it never happens completely so i think is not worth even analysis this potential scenario

kikiParticipantMarion,
i am not familiar with foreclosure process, so i do not what will happen to you as tenant after the house goes on auction. All i see is you have a contract, you did not paid (wrongly advised, which can happen) but you spend they money, and this is what I have issues understanding.About 2 years ago i had to stay a couple of weeks in a hotel in NY, after 2 months the charges of about $1200 were not charged in the credit card. This was a lot of money for me as it was an emergency trip. Anyway, I called the hotel so they would charge (they said they have it as paid in their system), then I called my credit card company and they said that they have not received the charge request for the hotel so they will not charge me. Well, 13 months later, i got the charge in my credit card. it was a suprised but you know what? i did stayed in the hotel and it was my responsibility. I paid it. that simple.
as i have seen other people on this board, when they found out the house they rent were in foreclosure they put the money in an escrow account. They PAID.
but anyway, it is what it is, you already did not pay and you already spend the money, now what? that is what you should be looking.
I would recommend you to move but i would also recommend you to consider how to pay what you owe, the latter as matter of principle.
